Former President Donald Trump has revealed that he plans to surrender in Atlanta on August 24 as part of a 98-page indictment in Georgia. Trump and 18 other defendants are facing 41 criminal charges related to their alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state.
Through his Truth Social platform, Trump made the announcement, stating, “I’ll be going to Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday to be ARRESTED.” The decision to surrender on August 24 was reportedly reached through negotiations between Trump’s legal team and the Fulton County district attorney’s office. CNN had initially reported that Trump’s plan was to surrender at the Fulton County jail.
This development follows the release of a 98-page indictment last week, which Trump and his legal team have labeled as politically motivated and aimed at undermining his potential reelection campaign. The indictment accuses Trump and others of attempting to influence and manipulate election results.
Upon Trump’s surrender, the area surrounding the Rice Street Jail will undergo a “hard lockdown,” according to the local sheriff’s office. The bond agreement between Trump’s legal team and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis outlines a $200,000 bond for the former president. Additionally, Trump is instructed not to send any threatening messages on social media during the trial proceedings.
Trump, who remains a prominent figure in the Republican party and a potential contender for the 2024 presidential nomination, has chosen not to participate in the first Republican primary presidential debate, which is scheduled to take place just a day before his intended surrender.
The indictment, which was issued on August 14, set a deadline for Trump and co-defendants to surrender or face arrest by Friday at noon ET. While prosecutors have proposed a trial commencement date of March 4, Trump’s legal team has advocated for a trial to take place in 2026.
