Following their standout performances in the recently concluded World Cup 2023, top Indian batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have seen upward movements in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings for One-Day International (ODI) batsmen.
Virat Kohli, honored as the World Cup Player of the Tournament, has climbed from the fourth position to the third in the ODI rankings. The prolific batter showcased his prowess, amassing 765 runs and scoring three centuries during the tournament, contributing significantly to India’s campaign.
Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian team, displayed his aggressive batting style as an opening batsman in the World Cup. His impactful knocks have propelled him to the fourth position in the ODI rankings, marking a slight ascent.
Both Kohli and Sharma have narrowed the gap with the top-ranked ODI batsman, Shubman Gill. Gill continues to hold the premier position in the rankings with 826 points. Pakistan’s former captain Babar Azam is second with 823 points, followed by Virat Kohli at the third spot with 791 points. Rohit Sharma, with a notable contribution of 597 runs in the tournament, secures the fourth position with 769 rating points.
Impressively, three Indian batsmen find themselves among the top four in the ICC ODI rankings, reflecting the team’s batting prowess on the global stage.
In the fifth position is Quinton de Kock, known for his explosive batting, while New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell secures the sixth spot based on his cumulative run-tally of 552 in the World Cup.
Australian opener Travis Head, who played a pivotal role in Australia’s triumph in the World Cup final against India, has experienced a significant rise in the rankings. Head, named the Player of the Match for his spectacular knock of 137 runs in the final, has jumped 28 spots to secure the 15th position.
Shifting focus to the bowling department, South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj maintains his top position in the ICC ODI bowling rankings. Australia’s Josh Hazlewood, after a noteworthy World Cup campaign, has climbed four spots to secure the second position.
Among the Indian bowlers, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah occupy the third and fourth positions, respectively, in the ICC ODI bowling rankings. Mohammed Shami, the leading wicket-taker of the World Cup, holds the tenth position.
The updated ICC rankings reflect the individual excellence and collective achievements of players in the recently concluded World Cup, setting the stage for future cricketing endeavors.
