The Telangana Assembly Election unfolded as a closely contested political battle, with a narrow 2% vote swing favoring the Congress and leading to a significant shift in the state’s political dynamics. According to data from the Election Commission, the Congress emerged victorious, securing 64 seats in the 119-member assembly with a 39.40% vote share. In contrast, the long-ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), led by K Chandrasekhar Rao, secured 39 seats with a 37.35% vote share.
This outcome marked a notable decline for the BRS, which had been at the helm of Telangana’s governance since 2014. The party witnessed a substantial drop in its vote share, plummeting by over 10% from the 47% it secured in the 2018 assembly elections. In contrast, the Congress experienced an 11% gain in vote share, signaling a shifting political landscape in the state.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as a noteworthy player in the election, doubling its vote share and securing 8 assembly seats. This was a significant improvement compared to the previous assembly polls, where the party had only secured one seat with a 7% vote share.
Following the election results, a Congress delegation, led by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Anumula Revanth Reddy, met with Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to stake claim to form the government in the state. Anumula Revanth Reddy, who won from the Kodangal constituency, is now positioned as a key contender for the chief ministership, adding a new dimension to the political landscape.
Despite securing victory in Kodangal, Anumula Revanth Reddy faced defeat in Kamareddy. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) party, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, retained its seat tally while maintaining its vote share. In Kamareddy, BJP’s K Venkata Ramana Reddy emerged victorious, defeating both K Chandrasekhar Rao and Revanth Reddy.
Former Indian cricket team captain Mohammed Azharuddin, contesting from the Jubilee Hills constituency in Hyderabad, faced defeat, losing to the sitting BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath by 16,337 votes. Gopinath secured 80,549 votes, while Azharuddin garnered 64,212 votes.
The Telangana Assembly elections, conducted on November 30, concluded with the vote counting on December 3, revealing a dynamic political landscape. The Congress’s significant strides against the long-standing BRS dominance set the stage for a potential governance shift in the state, marking a crucial turning point in Telangana’s political narrative.
