Assam witnessed a significant breakthrough in its fight against drug trafficking as the state police seized contraband worth an estimated ₹100 crore, marking the largest-ever drug haul in the state. The operation, led by the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police in collaboration with Karimganj district police, resulted in the arrest of four drug peddlers involved in smuggling narcotics from Mizoram.

The STF Deputy Inspector General, Parthasarathi Mahanta, stated, “This is probably the largest drug seizure in eastern India in terms of market value. The drugs confiscated are worth at least ₹100 crore in the market.” He also attributed the success to the continuous and effective operations carried out by the Assam Police, causing an increase in the prices of narcotics.

The operation was initiated based on intelligence regarding the transportation of drugs from Mizoram into Assam. The police intercepted a car with a Mizoram registration plate at Suprakandi under the Nilambazar police station in Karimganj. The search of the vehicle revealed a significant haul of contraband concealed within the side body panels of its trunk.

The confiscated items included 5.1 kg of heroin, 64,000 Yaba tablets, and four packets of foreign cigarettes. The STF officials emphasized the strategic placement of the narcotics within the vehicle, indicating a deliberate attempt to conceal the illegal substances. The successful operation led to the arrest of four individuals involved in the drug trafficking network.

Among those apprehended, one was identified as a woman from Mizoram, while two others hailed from Thenzawl in Mizoram. The fourth individual was a resident of Karimganj. The diversity of the arrested individuals reflects the cross-border nature of the drug trade, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts among states to curb such activities.

The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, commended the police officials for their remarkable achievement. In a post on social media platform X, Chief Minister Sarma expressed his appreciation, saying, “BIGGEST EVER DRUGS HAUL WORTH OVER ₹100 CRORE. In a joint operation by @STFAssam & @karimganjpolice at Suprakandi, a huge quantity of drugs has been recovered – 5.1 kg heroin, 64,000 YABA tablets, 4 packets of foreign cigarettes. Four people have been arrested in this connection. Superb job @assampolice.”

The DGP of Assam, Gyanendra Pratap Singh, responded to the Chief Minister’s acknowledgment with gratitude, stating, “Grateful for the appreciation and recognition Sir. Our commitment to fulfill your resolve of a drug-free Assam is unwavering.” The coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies, coupled with intelligence-driven operations, have played a crucial role in combating the illicit drug trade in the region.

The significance of this drug seizure extends beyond the immediate impact on the criminal network. It underscores the determination of the Assam Police to tackle the root causes of drug trafficking, disrupt supply chains, and apprehend those involved in illegal activities. The success of this operation serves as a testament to the effectiveness of intelligence-led initiatives and collaborative efforts among law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of communities.

As Assam continues its fight against drug trafficking, such operations contribute to the larger goal of creating a drug-free environment, safeguarding the youth from the harmful effects of narcotics, and maintaining the overall security of the state. The latest drug seizure reinforces the commitment of Assam Police to proactively address the challenges posed by drug-related crimes and protect the interests of the citizens.
