The British Parliament recently voiced its concerns over the death of Shubkaran Singh at the Khanauri border amid the ongoing farmers’ Delhi Chalo march. Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, a Sikh Member of Parliament from Britain, emphasized the need to protect the freedom of expression of farmers and ensure their safety during protests.

Addressing the Parliament, Dhesi highlighted the serious concerns raised by his constituents, including members of the Sikh community and Gurdwaras, regarding the safety of protesting farmers marching towards New Delhi. He specifically mentioned the tragic death of a protestor at the hands of the police, who reportedly suffered a fatal bullet wound to the head. Additionally, he noted that another protestor sustained a bullet wound, while several others were injured and receiving treatment in hospitals.

Along with British Parliament, Dhesi also criticized the Indian government’s actions to suspend social media accounts and posts on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) linked to the farmers’ protest. He expressed dismay over reports that X had been compelled to take down legitimate posts and accounts of activists, stressing the importance of protecting freedom of expression and the human rights of protestors.

Furthermore, Dhesi questioned the leader of the House about the government’s representations to its Indian counterparts regarding the protection of protestors’ rights and freedoms. He called for concrete actions to safeguard the freedom of expression and ensure the safety of protestors amidst ongoing demonstrations.

The tragic death of Shubkaran Singh during the Delhi Chalo march has drawn international attention, especially from the British Parliament to the plight of farmers in India and the need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing protests. Singh, a resident of Punjab’s Bathinda district, lost his life in a clash between security personnel and protesting farmers at the Khanauri border. His death underscores the risks faced by farmers advocating for their rights and demands.

Shubkaran Singh, described as a hardworking farmer involved in animal husbandry, joined the protests at the Khanauri border to support the farmers’ demands. His untimely demise has left his family and community mourning the loss of a beloved son and fellow activist. Singh’s commitment to the cause of farmers’ rights serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those fighting for justice and equality.

In response to the Indian government’s directives, X has complied with orders to suspend accounts and posts associated with the farmers’ protest. However, the social media company has expressed its disagreement with these actions, reaffirming its commitment to freedom of expression. Despite facing pressure from authorities, X remains steadfast in its support for individuals’ rights to express their opinions and participate in peaceful protests.

As the farmers’ protest continues to garner global attention, it is essential for governments to uphold fundamental rights, including the freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly. The tragic loss of Shubkaran Singh underscores the urgency of addressing the underlying issues driving the protests and finding a peaceful resolution that respects the dignity and rights of all stakeholders involved.
