Yogi Adityanath is a politician, leader of Bharatiya Janata Party and Mahant of the Gorakhnath Math, a Hindu temple in Gorakhpur. He is the founder of a youth organisation, the Hindu Yuva Vahini. He has been the Member of Parliament from the Gorakhpur constituency, Uttar Pradesh for five consecutive terms since 1998. He is 22nd and current chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.

 

Yogi Adityanath was born on 5 June 1972 in the village of Panchur, in Pauri Garhwal, Uttar Pradesh (now Uttarakhand). His father, Late Anand Singh Bisht, was a forest ranger. He was the second born in the family, among four brothers and three sisters. He completed his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in Uttarakhand. He left his home around the 1990s to join the Ayodhya Ram temple movement. Mahant Avaidyanath was leading the Ayodhya Ram temple movement at that time. He became a disciple of Mahant Avaidyanath, the chief of the Gorakhnath Math.

Yogi Adityanath belongs to Hindutva politics in Uttar Pradesh that can be traced back to the both Mahant Digvijay Nath and his successor Mahanth Avaidyanath who led Ayodhya Andolan. When elected to the 12th Lok Sabha at age of 26, Yogi Adityanath was its youngest member. He was elected to the Parliament from Gorakhpur for five consecutive terms (1998, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014). After his first electoral win, Adityanath started Hindu Yuva Vahini, which came to be known for its activities in the eastern Uttar Pradesh and was instrumental in Adityanath’s meteoric rise. Yogi Adityanath became Mahanth or high priest of the Gorakhnath Math after the demise of Mahanth Avaidyanath on 12 September 2014. He was made Peethadhishwar of the Math amid traditional rituals of the Nath sect two days later.

 

Mahanth Yogi Adityanath as CM :

Mahanth Yogi Adityanath was a prominent campaigner for the BJP in the 2017 assembly elections in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The governor appointed him Chief Minister on 18 March 2017. After becoming a Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, he kept around 36 ministries under his direct control. In his first cabinet meeting, held on 4 April 2017, the decision was taken to forgive loans to nearly 87 lakh small and marginal farmers of Uttar Pradesh, amounting to ₹363.59 billion. Yogi Adityanath ordered the forming of quasi-vigilante anti-“romeo” squads. He imposed a blanket ban on cow-smuggling and a stay on UPPSC civil service exam results, exams and interviews until further order. He imposed a ban on the vices of tobacco, paan and gutka in government offices across the state, and compelled officials to pledge to devote 100 hours every year for the Swachh Bharat Mission. More than 100 “black sheep” policemen were suspended by the Uttar Pradesh police. After the Citizenship Amendment Act protests in Uttar Pradesh, he put up hoardings with names, photographs and addresses of protestors.

 

Yogi Adityanath along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Moon Jae-in, President of South Korea, inaugurating the Samsung manufacturing plant, world’s largest smartphone manufacturing factory, in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. His government was credited for making 50 megawatts of power and a 22-km-long electricity line in a record four months for the Samsung mobile plant. In November 2019, Uttar Pradesh government along with Ministry of Defense laid the foundation stone of Defence Industrial Corridor project in Jhansi. Yogi Adityanath held consultations with private firms in order to increase private investment in the defence corridor project.

In September 2020, Adityanath govt considered passing an ordinance to stop religious conversion in the of love, “Love Jihad”. On 31 October, Adityanath govt announced that a Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Ordinance, 2020 to curb “Love Jihad” would be passed by his government.

 

The New York Times relayed analysts’ estimations of Adityanath as a candidate for Prime Minister of India in 2024. In August 2020, India Today’s “Mood of the nation” survey showed Adityanath as the best-performing chief minister in India. In July 2021, Adityanath introduced the UP population control draft bill 2021–2030. On the event of World Population Day, the chief minister unveiled the policy on reducing the population growth for the forthcoming years. On 10 March 2022, with the announcement of the legislative assembly results, BJP-led NDA alliance secured 273 seats with Adityanath winning his second term. He became the first chief minister to return to power after completing a full 5-year term in office in UP. He also became only the third chief minister, in Uttar Pradesh’s political history to complete a full 5-year term as the chief minister of the state after Behan Kumari Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav. In the buildup to the assembly elections, Adityanath successfully used a campaign with a bulldozer as its main image, earning him the nickname “Bulldozer Baba”. The term had initially been used as a taunt by an opposition party.

Political Journey of Yogi Adityanath :

  • Yogi Adityanath’s political journey began in 1996 when he was named in charge of managing the election campaign for Mahant Avaidyanath.

Controversies :

  • In June 2015, Adityanath said that those who want to avoid Yoga can leave Hindustan. He “requested” those who see communalism in the Sun God to “drown themselves in the sea” or live in a dark room for the rest of their lives.
  • In February 2020, he said publicly, “Muslims who chose to stay in India when it was partitioned following independence from Britain did the country no favours”.

  • For socially and economically weaker and backward children, he provides hostel.
  • He raises awareness against religious and social conventions and evils.
  • He is also running more than two dozens educational institutions and working for extending health facilities to rural areas.
  • Several spiritual and cultural organisations are also run by him including the centres of the oldest meditation system of India and the centre of a prominent philosophical sect of Nath Panth.

  • Yogi Adityanath is an avid animal lover. He promotes campaigning Cow protection.
