Tata Power Delhi Distribution Achieves Remarkable RPO

Tata Group’s engineering services company Tata Technologies has raised ₹791 crore from 67 investors via anchor book on Tuesday, November 21, a day before its IPO opens for bidding.

In a significant stride towards sustainability, Tata Power Delhi Distribution has yet again achieved a remarkable feat by fulfilling its Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) for the third consecutive year. The company proudly procured a substantial 26% of its electricity from clean energy sources during the fiscal year 2022-23. This accomplishment underscores Tata Power Delhi Distribution’s unwavering commitment to embracing renewable energy and promoting a greener future.

Under the Renewable Purchase Obligation framework, electricity distribution companies (discoms) are mandated to procure a predetermined percentage of their total power supply from renewable energy sources. This initiative aims to bolster the integration of clean energy into the grid and reduce the carbon footprint of the energy sector.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution’s noteworthy achievement in consistently meeting the RPO requirements is indeed exceptional. The company, which serves as the electricity provider for around 70 lakh residents in north and northwest Delhi, procured an impressive 2,600 million units of green power during the stated fiscal year. This renewable energy was sourced from diverse sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectricity. More than a quarter of the total units supplied by the company to its consumers were generated from renewable sources.

The varying RPO percentages across states are determined by respective electricity regulatory commissions. In the case of the national capital, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) set the RPO obligation at 21.35% for the fiscal year 2022-23. Tata Power Delhi Distribution’s compliance with this obligation not only demonstrates regulatory adherence but also reinforces the company’s profound commitment to a sustainable and eco-friendly future.

By consistently meeting the RPO requirements for three consecutive years, Tata Power Delhi Distribution has solidified its position as a fully compliant power distribution entity. This achievement mirrors the company’s dedication to upholding environmental responsibility and promoting the utilization of green power. Tata Power Delhi Distribution’s CEO, Ganesh Srinivasan, emphasizes that RPO compliance is not just a regulatory practice for the company; it’s an integral part of their responsibility towards consumers and the environment.

With sustainability at the forefront of their operations, Tata Power Delhi Distribution envisions a future where green energy plays a pivotal role in powering the nation. The company’s forward-looking goal involves sourcing 50% of its energy requirements from renewable sources in the next few years. This aspiration aligns perfectly with the broader governmental vision of achieving self-reliance in the energy sector while fostering environmental well-being.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution’s consistent fulfillment of its Renewable Purchase Obligation stands as a testament to its commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness. The company’s dedication to green energy not only contributes to a cleaner present but also paves the way for a more sustainable and promising future.
