In a disappointing turn of events for fans of Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone residing in Gulf countries, the much-anticipated film ‘Fighter’ has faced an official ban across Middle East regions for theatrical release. Film business expert and producer Girish Johar shared the setback on social media, revealing that the film will only be released in the UAE with a PG15 classification. The reason behind the ban has not been disclosed.

Directed by Siddharth Anand, ‘Fighter’ also features Anil Kapoor, Karan Singh Grover, and Akshay Oberoi. The film, set to release in Indian theaters on January 25, explores the narrative of the Balakot airstrike conducted by the Indian Armed Forces in Pakistan. The airstrike was a response to a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, attributed to the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist group, which claimed the lives of nearly 40 CRPF soldiers.

Despite facing a roadblock in the Middle East, ‘Fighter’ has generated considerable excitement in India. It marks Deepika Padukone’s third collaboration with director Siddharth Anand after ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ in 2008 and the 2023 blockbuster ‘Pathaan.’ Additionally, it is Siddharth Anand’s third project with Hrithik Roshan, following the success of ‘Bang Bang!’ and ‘War.’

The film’s plot revolves around Squadron Leader Shamsher Pathania, played by Hrithik Roshan, and Squadron Leader Minal Rathore, portrayed by Deepika Padukone. Anil Kapoor takes on the role of Group Captain Rakesh Jai Singh, also known as Rocky. ‘Fighter’ delves into the complexities of the Balakot airstrike, showcasing the bravery and strategic acumen of the Indian Armed Forces.

While the specific reasons for the ban in Middle East regions remain undisclosed, it is not uncommon for films to face regulatory challenges due to various factors, including cultural sensitivities, political considerations, or content that may be deemed inappropriate. Each country’s censorship boards have their own set of guidelines and criteria for approving or rejecting films.

For the Indian audience, the anticipation for ‘Fighter’ has been building, especially considering the success of Siddharth Anand and Hrithik Roshan’s previous collaborations. ‘Bang Bang!’ and ‘War’ were both major box office hits, showcasing the director-actor duo’s ability to deliver high-octane action films that resonate with audiences.

Siddharth Anand expressed his sentiments about ‘Fighter’ and its significance, stating that it holds a special place for him and his wife Mamta, as it marks the beginning of their film company, MARFLIX. He emphasized the ambitious nature of the film and the dedication they have poured into it. Anand also drew parallels to their earlier collaboration, ‘Pathaan,’ expressing hope that audiences will shower ‘Fighter’ with the same love and enthusiasm.

As ‘Fighter’ gears up for its theatrical release in India, the filmmakers and cast are optimistic about its reception. The ban in Middle East regions may present challenges, but the film’s compelling narrative and star-studded cast are expected to draw audiences in the regions where it is permitted. The ban highlights the complexities and varied sensitivities involved in the global release of films, showcasing the importance of navigating diverse cultural landscapes in the entertainment industry.
