The study, titled 'Immunogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines BBV152 (COVAXIN) and ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (COVISHIELD) in seronegative and seropositive individuals in India: a multicentre, non-randomized observational study', compared the immune responses in users for Covishield v Covaxin

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has recently conducted a comprehensive study shedding light on the protective effects of COVID-19 vaccination on hospital mortality. This study, which involved 29,509 hospitalized COVID-19 patients from 42 hospitals, aimed to understand the impact of vaccination on severe outcomes of the disease.

One of the most striking findings of the study is that individuals who received one or two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine were significantly protected from hospital death. This is particularly encouraging news amidst ongoing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. The study suggests that vaccination not only plays a crucial role in reducing the severity of COVID-19 but also offers substantial protection against fatal outcomes.

The study’s results indicate that in-hospital mortality among COVID-19 patients was approximately 14.5%. However, the mortality rate was notably higher among those above the age of 60 who had underlying health conditions such as diabetes, chronic kidney or liver disease, malignancy, and tuberculosis. This underscores the vulnerability of certain populations to severe COVID-19 outcomes and the importance of vaccination in protecting them.

Further analysis of the data revealed that more than half of the patients had at least one comorbidity, while the remaining 46.9% had no comorbidities. The most commonly reported symptoms among the patients were fever, shortness of breath, and dry cough. Interestingly, the study found that patients aged 40 and above had a 1.3 times higher risk of mortality compared to younger patients. This risk increased to 2.1 times for individuals aged 60 or above, highlighting the increased vulnerability associated with advanced age.

Notably, the study’s most significant finding was related to the protective impact of COVID-19 vaccination. It was observed that individuals who had received one dose of the vaccine experienced a 50% reduction in the odds of dying while in the hospital. For those who had received both doses, this protection increased to an impressive 60%. This highlights the critical role that vaccination plays in mitigating the severity of COVID-19 and reducing the risk of fatal outcomes.

In the context of India, where COVID-19 has entered an endemic phase, these findings have significant implications for public health strategies. As new variants of the virus continue to emerge, understanding the effectiveness of vaccination in preventing severe disease and death remains of utmost importance.

Dr. Samiran Panda, one of the authors of the study, emphasized that not every variant necessarily represents a significant threat. This underscores the need for continued vigilance and research to monitor the evolving landscape of the COVID-19 virus.

The ICMR study provides compelling evidence of the lifesaving benefits of COVID-19 vaccination. It reaffirms the importance of vaccination campaigns and underscores the need to prioritize vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with comorbidities, for vaccination. These findings offer hope in the ongoing battle against COVID-19 and serve as a reminder of the pivotal role that vaccination plays in protecting lives.
