Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, is all set to launch the highly anticipated Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) on August 22, 2023. This launch marks a significant step forward in the Indian government’s commitment to enhancing road safety by elevating the safety standards of motor vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes.

The primary objective of the Bharat NCAP is to empower car buyers with the ability to compare vehicles based on their crash safety performance. Under this program, car manufacturers can voluntarily submit their vehicles for testing according to the guidelines set by the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. Following the tests, the vehicles will be awarded star ratings for both adult occupants and child occupants.

The introduction of star ratings allows prospective car buyers to assess and compare the safety levels of various vehicles before making a purchase decision. By making such safety information readily available, there is an expected increase in demand for safer cars. This surge in demand will subsequently encourage car manufacturers to align their offerings with customer preferences for enhanced safety, contributing to an overall improvement in vehicle safety standards across the industry.

Furthermore, raising safety standards through the Bharat NCAP will bolster the competitiveness of Indian-made cars in the global market. By adhering to higher safety norms, Indian car manufacturers can strengthen their export potential and contribute to the nation’s reputation for producing safer vehicles.

The Bharat NCAP doesn’t just focus on immediate benefits but also envisions the development of a safety-conscious car market in India. The program aims to create a culture where safety considerations play a pivotal role in the design, manufacturing, and purchasing decisions related to vehicles.

As Nitin Gadkari launches the Bharat NCAP, India takes a significant stride towards enhancing road safety and promoting consumer awareness about vehicle safety. This initiative aligns with global best practices in automotive safety assessment and is poised to make a positive impact on road safety outcomes in the country.
