As uncertain global conditions force major tech firms to cut down their hiring, especially for freshers, premier institutions like Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani) are approaching their alumni network for the placement of students of latest batch

India’s premier institutes, renowned for producing top talent in various fields, are facing a significant challenge in securing placements for their recent batch of graduates due to a hiring slowdown in the information and technology (IT) and services sector. As a result, institutions like the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow and Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani are turning to their alumni networks for support in facilitating job opportunities for students.

The global economy is currently experiencing a slump unlike any seen in decades, with the technology sector being particularly affected. According to Arya Kumar, the dean of Alumni Relations at BITS Pilani, approximately 400,000 employees have been laid off globally in the technology sector since January 2022. This downturn has created a challenging environment for recent graduates seeking employment opportunities, especially in sectors heavily reliant on technology and services.

In response to these challenges, institutions like IIM Lucknow and BITS Pilani are leveraging their alumni networks to assist in the placement process. In a letter circulated on social media, Arya Kumar highlighted the importance of alumni support in helping students navigate through the current hiring crisis. While both institutes have dedicated placement teams working diligently to secure job placements for students, the additional support from alumni is seen as crucial in addressing the challenges posed by the hiring slowdown.

The situation is further exacerbated by the uncertain demand scenarios across global markets, particularly in the United States and Europe. Major tech firms, including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys, have scaled back their hiring efforts, especially at entry-level positions, in response to the economic downturn. This has created a competitive job market for recent graduates, making it essential for institutes to explore alternative avenues, such as alumni networks, to enhance placement prospects.

Despite the challenges posed by the hiring slowdown, institutions like BITS Pilani have managed to maintain a healthy placement percentage of 89.2% for the academic year 2022-23. However, the current hiring climate presents a more significant challenge, prompting institutions to seek additional support from alumni to ensure favorable placement outcomes for students.

The role of alumni networks in facilitating job placements extends beyond providing job opportunities. Alumni can also offer valuable insights, mentorship, and networking opportunities to current students, helping them navigate the complexities of the job market. By leveraging the collective experience and expertise of their alumni base, institutes can enhance the employability of their graduates and foster stronger connections between students and industry professionals.

While institutions like IIM Lucknow and BITS Pilani are actively engaging with their alumni networks, the success of these initiatives relies heavily on the willingness of alumni to participate and support recent graduates. Alumni engagement plays a crucial role in building a strong and vibrant community that extends beyond graduation.

The hiring slowdown in the IT and services sector has posed significant challenges for premier institutes in India. By harnessing the power of their alumni networks, institutions can provide valuable support to recent graduates in securing job placements and navigating the complexities of the job market. As the global economy continues to evolve, alumni collaboration remains essential in ensuring the continued success and growth of future generations of professionals.
