In a surprising turn of events, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has announced a temporary ceasefire in the ongoing dispute concerning “cash for query” allegations involving Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra. This decision comes as a gesture of respect for the auspicious occasion of Durga Puja and is observed from ashtami until Dashmi, concluding on October 24.

The feud between Nishikant Dubey and Mahua Moitra centers around allegations of corruption. Dubey publicly accused Moitra of accepting favors from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for raising questions in Parliament. Moitra vehemently refuted these allegations, asserting that she was being targeted by the BJP on behalf of the Adani Group. Moitra has been a vocal critic of the Adani Group both inside and outside Parliament.

The conflict took a significant turn when Nishikant Dubey filed a formal complaint of corruption against Mahua Moitra with Lokpal, India’s anti-corruption ombudsman. In response, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla referred the matter to Parliament’s Ethics Committee for a thorough investigation. On October 26, Dubey is expected to appear before the committee to provide his statement concerning the allegations against Moitra.

Mahua Moitra responded to these allegations by filing a defamation plea in the Delhi High Court. In her plea, she argued that she was unjustly targeted and questioned the credibility of Darshan Hiranandani’s affidavit. Hiranandani claimed that Moitra had targeted Gautam Adani as part of a conspiracy to tarnish Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reputation. Moitra raised concerns that the affidavit was allegedly “drafted by the PMO” and that Hiranandani was coerced into signing it under the threat of a “total shutdown” of his family’s businesses.

The Trinamool Congress has expressed its intent to make a decision regarding the matter following the completion of the parliamentary ethics committee’s investigation. Nishikant Dubey’s declaration of a temporary ceasefire during Durga Puja implies a pause in the contentious exchange of allegations that has been under the spotlight in the political landscape. This respite may offer an opportunity for a more considered and measured approach to resolving the dispute.
