In preparation for the upcoming state assembly elections in Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, the Congress party has released its first list of candidates. The party has put forward a total of 144 candidates for the Madhya Pradesh elections, 55 for Telangana, and 30 for Chhattisgarh.
Key Candidates and Constituencies
Among the prominent candidates, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel will be contesting from his Patan assembly constituency, while Deputy Chief Minister T S Singh Deo will be vying for the Ambikapur assembly seat.
In Madhya Pradesh, the party has fielded former chief minister and PCC chief Kamal Nath, who will be contesting from his Chhindwara assembly constituency. Another significant candidate is Jaivardhan Singh, son of former chief minister Digvijaya Singh, who has been nominated for the Raghogarh assembly seat.
Notably, the Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh faced a setback in March 2021 when 22 Congress MLAs resigned and joined the BJP under the leadership of Jyotiraditya Scindia, leading to the collapse of the government. The Congress is now striving to regain power in the state and has organized rallies featuring Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the party’s national general secretary.
Telangana’s Triangular Contest
In Telangana, the Congress party has nominated Pradesh Congress chief Anumala Revanth Reddy to contest from the Kodangal assembly seat. Meanwhile, CLP leader Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu will be running for the Madhira-SC seat. The upcoming assembly election in Telangana is expected to witness a three-way contest between the BJP, the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and the Congress.
In the previous 2018 assembly elections, the BRS secured victory by winning 88 out of 119 seats and maintained a substantial vote share of 47.4%. The Congress, coming in second, managed to secure 19 seats with a vote share of 28.7%.
Election Dates and Results
The Chhattisgarh assembly elections will be conducted in two phases on November 7 and 17. Madhya Pradesh’s elections are scheduled for November 17, and Telangana’s assembly polls will be held on November 30. The election results for all three states will be declared on December 3, marking a significant political event in the region.
