As the G20 Leaders Summit draws near, New Delhi’s administration is in full preparation mode for the significant event that will host world leaders such as US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. To accommodate the influx of dignitaries and manage the resulting traffic congestion, the administration has made the decision to keep all banks closed in New Delhi from September 8 to 10.

The move aims to curtail traffic movement during the event, especially on the days when most arrivals are expected (September 8) and when delegates will depart to their respective countries (September 10-11). This step is crucial to ensuring the safe and smooth passage of delegates from the airport to hotels and various venues throughout the summit.

Delhi Police’s Special Commissioner addressed the rationale behind the decision in a letter to the Chief Secretary, highlighting the need to create a conducive environment for the dignitaries’ movements within the city.

In preparation for the G20 Leaders Summit, Delhi Police conducted mock drills around the summit venue at Pragati Maidan and the hotels where dignitaries are scheduled to stay. Specialized security drills have been a crucial aspect of the preparations to ensure the safety and security of all participants.

The Delhi government also announced public holidays in schools from September 8 to 10, aligning with the closure of banks and offices during this period. While the orders for the public holidays are awaiting approval from the Lieutenant Governor, it is expected that all offices of the city government, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and private offices will remain closed.

As part of the preparations, rooms have been booked in leading 5-star hotels including ITC Maurya, Taj Palace, The Oberoi, The Lodhi, The Imperial, and Le Meridien to host the visiting dignitaries. However, reports indicate that the high tariffs for these accommodations have posed challenges for the respective missions of the countries participating in the event.

As New Delhi gears up to host this international event, the measures taken reflect the city’s commitment to providing a secure and smooth experience for world leaders and attendees during the G20 Leaders Summit.
