In a historic feat, the all-women contingent of the Delhi Police that marched down the Kartavya Path during the 75th Republic Day Parade has been declared the Best Marching Contingent for the year. This noteworthy recognition will be conferred on Martyrs’ Day, observed on January 30, celebrating the sacrifices made by those who laid down their lives for the nation.

The Republic Day Parade on January 26 witnessed a groundbreaking moment as, for the first time in the history of the Delhi Police, an all-women personnel contingent took center stage. Led by IPS officer Shweta K Sugathan, the marching contingent comprised 194 women head constables and constables. Notably, 80 percent of the participants hailed from the northeastern states, reflecting the Delhi Police’s policy to recruit personnel from this region as a strategic move to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the northeastern communities.

The recognition as the Best Marching Contingent adds another feather to the cap of the Delhi Police, which has received this esteemed award 15 times in the past, with the most recent honor in 2021. The force operates with a motto that encapsulates its core values: “Shanti, Seva aur Nyaya,” translating to peace, service, and justice.

The symbolic and historic nature of this achievement resonates beyond the confines of the Republic Day Parade. The inclusion of an all-women contingent not only marks a progressive step forward but also highlights the dedication and capability of women in law enforcement.

The IPS officer Shweta K Sugathan, who led the marching contingent, stands as a symbol of leadership and empowerment. Her role in guiding the women personnel through the parade emphasizes the diverse and inclusive nature of law enforcement in the capital.

The Delhi Police’s initiative to recruit from the northeastern states is a strategic effort to ensure representation from various regions and communities within the force. By doing so, they aim to foster a closer connection between the police and the people from the northeastern states, addressing any existing gaps and building trust within the community.

The Republic Day Parade, a grand spectacle showcasing India’s cultural diversity, military strength, and achievements, hosted French President Emmanuel Macron as the chief guest. The presence of two Rafale fighter jets flanked by a ‘Phoenix’ multi-role tanker transport aircraft of the French Air Force added an international flair to the event.

As part of the celebrations, a 30-member band contingent from France participated, drawing attention with their impressive performance. This isn’t the first time the French Armed Forces have been part of India’s Republic Day celebrations. In 2016, the French forces made history by becoming the first foreign military contingent to participate in the ceremony.

The collaboration between India and France in such ceremonial events highlights the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations. Last July, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honored as the guest of honor at the Bastille Day Parade in Paris, further solidifying the friendly relations between the two countries.

The recognition of Delhi Police’s all-women contingent as the Best Marching Contingent adds a significant chapter to the force’s legacy. Beyond the accolades, it stands as a testament to the evolving dynamics of law enforcement, emphasizing inclusivity and representation. The Republic Day Parade, with its diverse displays and international participation, continues to be a platform for celebrating unity, diversity, and collaborative partnerships on the global stage.
