In a significant move towards promoting renewable energy adoption and ensuring a cleaner environment, the Delhi government, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, has introduced the Delhi Solar Policy 2024. This policy aims to make solar power accessible and attractive for residents, encouraging them to install rooftop solar panels. Announcing the new policy, CM Kejriwal highlighted its consumer-friendly features, including the potential for consumers to eliminate their electricity bills and even earn through solar energy generation.

The Delhi Solar Policy 2024 is an evolution of the State Solar Policy 2016, which played a pivotal role in achieving 1500 MW of installed solar power capacity in the city. The new policy sets ambitious targets, aiming for 4500 megawatts of installed solar power capacity in Delhi by 2027. The focus is not only on expanding the adoption of solar energy but also on ensuring tangible benefits for consumers.

During a press conference, CM Kejriwal emphasized the success of the previous solar policy in laying the foundation for solar adoption in Delhi. The rooftop solar panels installed by residents under the 2016 policy contributed to 250 MW of electricity. Additionally, various power distribution companies (discoms) in Delhi purchased 1250 MW of solar power from outside the city. The combined result was 1500 MW of solar power availability, significantly contributing to reducing air pollution.

The primary objectives of the Delhi Solar Policy 2024 are to combat air pollution and address inflation by reducing or eliminating electricity bills for consumers. CM Kejriwal outlined the benefits for consumers, stating that under the new policy, electricity bills for non-subsidized residential consumers would be reduced to zero, and for commercial/industrial consumers, the bills would be reduced to 50% of their current amount.

One of the critical highlights of the policy is its focus on incentivizing residents to install rooftop solar panels. Currently, the Delhi government provides 200 units of fully subsidized electricity to residents and offers a 50% subsidy for those consuming 201 to 400 units per month. Beyond 400 units, there is no subsidy. However, the new policy promises that the electricity bills for residential consumers who opt for rooftop solar panels will be zero, regardless of their consumption.

The move towards rooftop solar panels aligns with the global shift towards decentralized and sustainable energy sources. By encouraging residents to generate their own electricity through solar panels, the Delhi government aims to reduce the burden on traditional power sources and promote a greener, more sustainable energy ecosystem.

CM Kejriwal also highlighted the environmental impact of solar power, emphasizing its role in reducing air pollution. By harnessing solar energy, Delhi residents can contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment.

The Delhi Solar Policies 2024 sets a positive precedent for renewable energy initiatives in urban areas. As residents embrace solar power, it not only benefits them financially but also contributes to the broader goal of creating eco-friendly and sustainable cities. The policy reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility and aligns with the global push towards clean energy transitions.

The Delhi Solar Policies 2024 is a forward-thinking initiative that empowers residents to actively participate in the transition to renewable energy. By providing financial incentives and making rooftop solar panels an economically viable option, the policy paves the way for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Delhi.
