The father of the man arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, has expressed profound shame and remorse over his son’s actions, stating, “That girl could have been my daughter.” In an interview with India Today, Raju Soni, the father of the accused, Bharat Soni, revealed the family’s anguish and demanded capital punishment for his son.
“We are not able to come out of shame. I can’t understand anything. What should I do in this situation? If I were in my son’s place, I would have admitted the crime and accepted the punishment,” Raju Soni said during the interview. He emphasized that those who commit such heinous crimes, whether they are his own child or others, should not be allowed to live and should face the most severe punishment, such as hanging or being shot by the police.
Raju Soni also stated that he would not visit the police station or the courts to meet his son, the accused because Bharat Soni had committed a crime. Bharat Soni sustained an injury when he allegedly attempted to escape while being taken to the crime scene for investigation.
In the interview, Raju Soni disclosed that he was aware of the incident since it occurred in Ujjain. He had even spoken to his son, Bharat, about it, but the latter remained silent and continued with his daily routines. Despite the accusations against his son, Raju Soni maintained that he would support him because he is his child. However, he added that he could not believe that his son was capable of such a crime. Raju expressed the hope that the truth would come out, and if Bharat was indeed guilty, he should be given strict punishment.
