The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed the state government to conduct a biometric capture campaign targeting all illegal immigrant from Myanmar and complete it by September 2023.

To execute this critical initiative, the Home Ministry has deputed a team from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to extend training and support to state government officers. The campaign’s scope extends to all districts across the state, aiming to ensure the successful collection of biometric data for every illegal immigrants from Myanmar. With the targeted completion date set for September 2023, the state is actively pursuing its mission to address this sensitive issue.

Earlier, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed deep concerns regarding the activities of immigrants from Myanmar. He accused them of engaging in deforestation, poppy cultivation, and fueling the drug menace within the region. In response to these challenges, the government has called upon the various districts to proactively identify and report illegal immigrants residing within their boundaries.

Over the past two years, the state’s detention centers have housed 104 illegal immigrants, comprising 24 men, 74 women, and 6 minors. These figures underscore the severity of the issue, prompting authorities to take swift action.

Recently, the Manipur government sought answers from Assam Rifles regarding reports of a large number of illegal immigrants entering the state in July. The Home Department revealed that as many as 718 illegal immigrants, including 301 children, were reported to have crossed into Manipur’s Chandel district on July 22nd and 23rd.

In response, the state government emphasized the crucial role of the border-guarding force in promptly and effectively repatriating these illegal immigrants to their home country. Addressing this matter promptly is vital for maintaining security and stability within the state and ensuring the well-being of its residents.
