In a remarkable display of bravery and maritime prowess, the Indian Navy executed a daring Anti-Piracy rescue Operation off the East Coast of Somalia, rescuing the crew of an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel, Al Naeemi. The operation, carried out by the Indian Navy warship INS Sumitra, thwarted a piracy attempt and successfully saved 19 Pakistani nationals who were held hostage by Somali pirates.

The Indian Navy released a video documenting the entire rescue mission, showcasing the courage and determination of the naval forces in ensuring maritime security. In the video, crew members, visibly relieved after their ordeal, express gratitude to the Indian Navy for saving them from the clutches of Somali pirates.

As the Indian Navy warship approached the scene, the Somali pirates, realizing the imminent threat, attempted to flee, leaving behind the hijacked vessel. One of the crew members recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “Somalis had held us since morning…then the Indian Navy came. Somalis saw them. They were scared.”

The Indian Navy’s decisive action included firing warning shots and employing “aerial domination by ALH” to ensure the safe rescue of the crew. The crew members, upon their rescue, expressed their heartfelt thanks, shouting, “Thank you, thank you hamara jaan bachaya (you saved our lives).”

In an official statement, the Indian Navy highlighted the success of the operation, stating, “Having thwarted the Piracy attempt on FV Iman (with 17 Iranian Nationals), the warship (INS Sumitra) has carried out another successful anti-piracy op off the East Coast of Somalia, rescuing Fishing Vessel Al Naeemi and her Crew (19 Pakistani Nationals) from 11 Somali Pirates.”

The video released by the Indian Navy on Wednesday emphasized the nation’s commitment to maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).

INS Sumitra, an indigenous Offshore Patrol Vessel, had been deployed for Anti-Piracy and Maritime Security Operations in the East of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden. The Indian Navy’s proactive measures in responding to distress calls and addressing maritime threats underscore its dedication to keeping the seas safe for mariners of all nationalities.

This recent operation adds to the Indian Navy’s track record of successful anti-piracy missions and highlights its role in maintaining security in the strategically important Indian Ocean Region. The Navy continues to play a crucial role in safeguarding maritime interests and responding to emergencies, reinforcing India’s commitment to a secure and stable maritime environment.
