The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has imposed a fine of ₹1.2 crore on IndiGo in connection with the recent incident where passengers were spotted having food on the tarmac at Mumbai airport. This development comes after the civil aviation ministry issued a showcause notice to both IndiGo airline and Mumbai international airport in response to a viral video showing passengers eating on the airport’s tarmac.

The incident gained attention when a social media user posted a video depicting passengers of IndiGo’s Goa-Delhi flight “having dinner just next to IndiGo plane.” The video quickly went viral, leading to scrutiny and action from aviation authorities.

In response to the incident, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport issued a statement, explaining the circumstances surrounding the situation. According to the statement, the IndiGo flight 6E 2195 (Goa to Delhi) was diverted due to unfavorable weather conditions. The flight, already significantly delayed in Goa, experienced irate passengers who rushed out of the aircraft as soon as the step ladder was connected.

The airport operators, in coordination with the Central Industrial Security Force’s Quick Reaction Team (CISF QRT), cordoned off the passengers into a safety zone. This action was taken as passengers refused to board the airline coach and proceed to the Terminal Building. The passengers were kept under strict watch by airline authorities and security until further actions were taken.

The BCAS’s imposition of a ₹1.2 crore fine on IndiGo underscores the severity of the incident and the need for accountability in ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers. Tarmac dining raises concerns about security protocols and passenger discipline, prompting authorities to take corrective measures.

The civil aviation ministry’s showcause notice signals a comprehensive investigation into the incident, seeking explanations from both IndiGo and Mumbai airport. It remains to be seen how the airline and airport respond to the notice and the steps they take to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The incident not only highlights the challenges airlines face in managing disruptions and passenger behavior but also emphasizes the importance of strict adherence to aviation regulations. As the aviation industry evolves, incidents like these underscore the need for continuous improvement in safety protocols, communication strategies, and passenger engagement to ensure a secure and comfortable travel experience for all.
