In a recent address at Nalanda University, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar expressed his concerns regarding inappropriate comments made by some individuals about constitutional institutions while viewing them through a political lens. He emphasized the significance of dignified conduct, especially for those holding high positions, and stressed the need to avoid politicizing constitutional functionaries for personal gains.
Mr. Dhankar urged everyone to be responsible and refrain from evaluating constitutional institutions solely based on political considerations, emphasizing that such actions are against the cultural ethos. He mentioned that political advantage should not be sought by making disparaging comments about these vital institutions.
Speaking to an audience of students, staff, and faculty at Nalanda University, the Vice President praised the university’s historical significance and legacy, considering it a potent and powerful brand in the field of education. He encouraged the university community to elevate this legacy further.
Mr. Dhankar acknowledged that Nalanda’s revival would grant India a global platform for disseminating knowledge and appreciated the use of Nalanda Mahavihara’s image during the recent G20 summit. He described the use of Nalanda’s image as a symbol of a non-controversial, non-confrontational, collaborative, cooperative, and consensual approach to growth.
Highlighting the transformative impact of education, the Vice President stated that knowledge is the most impactful mechanism for societal change and the reduction of inequities. He commended the emergence of an ecosystem in India that allows individuals to utilize their energy, talents, and potential to realize their dreams.
Reflecting on India’s economic journey, Mr. Dhankar noted that the country’s transformation from one of the “fragile five” economies to the world’s fifth-largest economy is a remarkable achievement. He expressed confidence that India would become the third-largest economy globally by the end of the decade.
The Vice President emphasized the importance of wisdom, tolerance, and respecting differing viewpoints in a globalized world. He encouraged students to remain inquisitive and continue learning throughout their lives.
Recognizing the youth as democracy’s foot soldiers, Mr. Dhankar cautioned them about malicious narratives on social media that aim to tarnish the country’s image. He urged students to actively counter such narratives and uphold their responsibility to society.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar commended Nalanda University for its sustainable practices, being a net-zero energy, net-zero emission, and net-zero waste campus—the first of its kind in India. This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
