West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has categorically rejected the railways’ request for the demolition of the Dakshineswar skywalk, a structure connecting the famous Dakshineswar temple to the station. The Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) had sought permission from the state government for clearing and shifting parts of the skywalk to facilitate the proposed extension of the metro viaduct beyond the Daksineswar station.
Addressing a press conference, Mamata Banerjee expressed her strong opposition to the proposal, emphasizing her commitment to preserving heritage structures. She stated, “I will never allow the removal of that structure till the last drop of my blood. I will not allow anyone to touch it.” The Chief Minister referred to the Dakshineswar Skywalk as her dream project and affirmed that she would protect it as long as she is alive.
Highlighting the significance of heritage preservation, Banerjee criticized the railways, stating, “They talk about religion and used to accuse me that I don’t allow Durga Puja in the state. They now want to demolish the Dakshineswar skywalk. This is their true nature.”
Banerjee expressed her willingness to cooperate with the railways but firmly opposed any attempts to demolish the heritage structure. She also mentioned the demand for land by the railways at the Alipore Body Guard Lines for the Joka-Esplanade Metro project.
The Chief Minister expressed her dismay at learning about the railways’ proposal through a news report despite the letter being sent to the state government on November 20. She directed officials to promptly bring such letters to her notice in the future, emphasizing the importance of staying informed about such matters.
The RVNL had made the proposal after the Metro Railway Kolkata requested an extension of the viaduct to ensure adequate signal overlap, allowing smoother operation of trains between Dum Dum and Dakshineswar. This extension is part of the North-South line, and the railways sought permission for the removal and shifting of structural utilities, including parts of the Dakshineswar skywalk.
Mamata Banerjee’s firm stance against the demolition reflects her commitment to preserving heritage structures and landmarks in the state. The Dakshineswar skywalk holds cultural and historical significance, connecting worshippers and visitors to the iconic Dakshineswar temple.
