Manipur Disruptions Escalate, Clashes in Parliament

Once again on Thursday, the proceedings in Parliament descended into a heated exchange of vocal reprisals between the opposition and government lawmakers. They clashed with a cacophony of slogans like “INDIA, INDIA” and “Modi, Modi,” disrupting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s address on the nation’s foreign policy. The opposition’s outcry began with chants of “Manipur, Manipur,” highlighting the ongoing ethnic clashes in the northeastern state and expressing dissatisfaction with business as usual in the upper house.

As the slogans echoed through the Rajya Sabha hall, the government lawmakers rose together, fervently endorsing the Prime Minister with chants of “Modi, Modi.” In response, the opposition countered with “INDIA, INDIA,” the name of their new coalition.

Throughout Mr. Jaishankar’s address, the opposition continually interrupted, leading the minister to describe their actions as “partisan politics.” He expressed disappointment that the opposition refused to acknowledge the achievements of the President, Vice President, and Prime Minister, criticizing their prioritization of political interests over national ones.

The Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, responded by accusing the Prime Minister of neglecting parliamentary responsibilities while actively campaigning in Rajasthan, leading to a lack of respect for democracy and the constitution.

The parliamentary session was marked by persistent disruptions as the opposition demanded a detailed discussion on the Manipur situation and a statement from the Prime Minister. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice due to the upheaval. Moreover, the opposition’s symbolic protest, appearing in black attire, drew criticism from ruling party members.

The ongoing monsoon session of parliament, which started last Thursday, has been fraught with interruptions as the opposition members press for resolution on the Manipur situation and seek accountability from the Prime Minister.
