Manipur Unrest: Opposition’s Black Clothes Protest

Opposition leaders made a strong statement today by arriving at Parliament donned in black attire as a symbolic protest against the unrest in Manipur. The move came as a response to the ongoing violence in the region, which has resulted in the loss of more than 100 lives in recent months. The horrifying video of two Manipur women paraded naked has further fueled their demand for a discussion in Parliament and a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Among the MPs dressed in black was Raghav Chadha, a Rajya Sabha member from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who explained that the protest aimed to express solidarity with the people of Manipur during this tragic time. AAP MP Sanjay Singh, who is currently suspended from Rajya Sabha, also joined in the demonstration.

The government has expressed readiness for a discussion on the matter but encountered hurdles due to disagreements over the procedural rules under which the discussion should take place. Additionally, the opposition’s request for a statement from the Prime Minister has not been granted, though Home Minister Amit Shah has offered to address Parliament on the issue.

In response to the Opposition’s protest, Union Minister Piyush Goyal made a sharp remark, criticizing their actions and stating that their future appears bleak. He expressed frustration with the opposition’s approach and accused them of failing to understand India’s rising power.

The black clothes protest has garnered support from all members of the Opposition Front INDIA, emphasizing their collective stance on the matter. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi highlighted that their attire was meant to challenge the Prime Minister’s perceived arrogance and indifference towards the country’s pressing issues, including the situation in Manipur.

The protests have led to repeated adjournments in both Houses of Parliament in recent days, underscoring the gravity of the situation. As the unrest in Manipur continues to be a matter of concern, the Opposition’s symbolic protest serves as a potent expression of their commitment to addressing the issue and seeking accountability from the government.
