A police official in Chennai was suspended after making communal statements against Muslims and Christians. The official, identified as Inspector S. Selvam, was caught on camera making the statements during a speech at a temple function in Chennai on Sunday, July 31, 2023.
In the video, Selvam can be heard saying that Muslims and Christians are “not true Indians” and that they should be “driven out of the country.” He also made derogatory remarks about their religious practices. The video of Selvam’s speech went viral on social media, and he was subsequently suspended by the police department.
The department said that Selvam’s statements were “highly objectionable” and that they “do not reflect the views of the police department.” Selvam’s suspension has been welcomed by Muslim and Christian groups in Chennai. They have called for him to be arrested and charged with hate speech.
