Approximately 500 students at Chaudhary Devi Lal University in Sirsa have come forward accusing a professor of sexual assault, leading them to write a letter urging action to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, and the women’s commission. According to a report by the Times of India, the students allege that the professor sexually exploited them after summoning them to his chamber. Despite being exonerated twice by the university’s internal complaint committee, an FIR is anticipated following a preliminary probe.
ASP Deepti Garg stated that an FIR would be registered after the initial investigation. The accused professor vehemently denies the sexual assault allegations, dismissing them as “political vendetta.” He asserts, “I am being targeted because I have been active in some work at the university. I am ready to face any probe against me.”
This marks the fourth letter penned by students against the professor, with all four letters sent from the Khairpur post office on Hisar Road. The initial letter, dispatched to the university in June 2023, prompted an internal investigation that found no evidence supporting the allegations against the professor.
Subsequent letters were addressed to the Haryana Governor in November and December, prompting the governor to instruct the university to conduct further investigations. However, the professor received a clean chit once again.
In the latest letter, college girls allege, “He calls us individually to his office bathroom and touches us inappropriately…When we protested against this, he threatened us with dire consequences.” The students also claim that the professor destroyed all evidence, including CCTV footage of his room.
Expressing fear of repercussions, the letter stated, “We can’t write our names and contact numbers as it will malign our own image if no action is taken by the professor. The dignity of our family will be at stake. He has political influence and has threatened to get us expelled if we speak against him.”
University officials have reported that colleagues were summoned to record statements, but many opted to skip the sessions. The situation raises concerns about the alleged abuse of power and the importance of addressing such serious accusations to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
The letter to top authorities, including the Chief Minister, Governor, and women’s commission, underscores the urgency and gravity of the situation. The students’ repeated attempts to bring attention to the alleged misconduct indicate a persistence in seeking justice and accountability.
The case also highlights the complexities involved in handling such accusations, especially when they involve individuals with political influence. The need for a thorough and impartial investigation is crucial to ascertain the veracity of the claims and to ensure that the rights and safety of the students are protected.
As the investigation progresses, it will be essential to closely monitor the actions taken by the authorities to address the students’ concerns and to maintain transparency in the process. Sexual assault allegations demand a thorough and fair investigation, recognizing the sensitivity of the matter and prioritizing the well-being of the students involved.
