The violence-stricken region of Sandeshkhali in West Bengal witnessed further turmoil as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers allegedly resorted to derogatory remarks against an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Jaspreet Singh, by labeling him as a ‘Khalistani.’ This incident occurred when Singh, along with his team, was stationed at Dhamakhali to prevent the visit of senior West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari to the restive area.

Singh, who wears a turban as part of his Sikh identity, confronted the BJP supporters, condemning their actions and questioning their prejudiced attitude towards him solely based on his religious appearance. Despite fulfilling his duty as a police officer, Singh faced discriminatory remarks from the BJP workers, triggering widespread condemnation.

In response, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul, accompanying Adhikari, refuted the allegations of calling Singh a ‘Khalistani’ and accused the officer of failing to fulfill his duties as per constitutional norms. However, Singh reiterated that he was merely carrying out his responsibilities and emphasized the need to refrain from religious discrimination.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident, denouncing the BJP’s divisive politics and its attempt to tarnish the reputation of the Sikh community. Banerjee underscored the significant contributions and sacrifices made by Sikhs to the nation and vowed to protect Bengal’s social harmony against such divisive tactics.

The Sikh community expressed outrage over the incident, with members planning protests outside the BJP’s state headquarters in Kolkata and in Asansol. The derogatory remarks made against Singh sparked widespread indignation and highlighted the need to address religious prejudice and discrimination in society.

The visit of Suvendu Adhikari to Sandeshkhali was marred by controversy as West Bengal police initially prevented his entry, citing prohibitory orders and legal proceedings initiated by the state government. However, Adhikari later obtained permission from the Calcutta High Court to visit the troubled area, where tensions had escalated following allegations of land-grab and sexual assault against a Trinamool Congress leader.

The unrest in Sandeshkhali underscores the underlying tensions and political turmoil gripping certain regions of West Bengal. The incident involving the Sikh IPS officer sheds light on the challenges of maintaining law and order in politically sensitive areas and the imperative of fostering tolerance and respect for diversity within society.

As the situation unfolds, it is imperative for all stakeholders to uphold the principles of inclusivity, tolerance, and rule of law to prevent further escalation of tensions and promote peaceful coexistence in the region. Only through dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect can lasting solutions be achieved to address the root causes of conflict and ensure the safety and well-being of all communities.
