Amit Shah is a prominent Indian politician. He is a Lok Sabha Member from Gandhinagar. He is a close aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He shot to fame in 2014, when he was given the charge of managing the BJP’s election campaign in Uttar Pradesh. Under his leadership, the BJP recorded its best performance in Uttar Pradesh by winning 73 seats out of 80. He is currently serving as the Minister of Home Affairs and the first Minister of Co-operation of India.
Amit Shah was born in Mumbai on Thursday, 22 October 1964. His full name is Amit Anilchandra Shah. He belongs to a Hindu Vaishnava family, and he is a Gujrati Baniya. Earlier when his caste wasn’t known, many media persons and politicians claimed that he was a Jain. On 6 April 2018, he refuted these claims in a press conference in Mumbai by stating that he is a Hindu Vaishnav and not a Jain. His great grandfather was the Nagarseth of the small state of Mansa. His father, AnilChandra Shah, a businessman from Mansa, owned a successful PVC pipe business. His mother, Kusumben Shah, was a homemaker. Amit Shah did his schooling from the Jyoti Higher Secondary School in Ahmedabad. He pursued Biochemistry from the CU Shah Science College in Ahmedabad. after completing his college education, he worked for his father’s PVC pipe business. He also worked as a stockbroker in the Co-Operative Banks of Ahmedabad. He is married to Sonal Shah and they have a son, Jay Shah, who is a businessman and is married to Rishita Patel.
Amit Shah was interested in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since childhood. He used to take part in the neighbourhood branches of the RSS. He officially got into the RSS as a Swayamsevak during his college days in Ahmedabad. He First met Narendra Modi in 1982 through Ahmedabad RSS social Circles. He became a member of the BJP in 1987, one year before Narendra Modi joined the party. His first assignment as a BJP member was to be a poll agent in Ahmedabad’s Naranpura ward. He gradually rose in the BJYM hierarchy, in which he held various posts including ward secretary, treasurer of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, taluka secretary, state secretary, vice president and general secretary of the Gujarat BJP.
Over the years, Amit Shah was given the responsibility to handle several campaigns and movements, such as the Ram Janambhoomi Movement and the Ekta Yatra. He successfully handled these campaigns and made the people of Gujarat in favour of the BJP. He became known for his management skills when he was the election campaign manager for Lal Krishna Advani in Gandhinagar during the 1991 Lok Sabha elections. He successfully managed his campaign for the next two decades until the General Elections of 2009. In 1995, He contested and won the Gujarat Assembly Elections from the Sarkhej Constituency, and the BJP formed its first government in Gujarat, with Keshubhai Patel as Chief Minister. Amit Shah was appointed as the Chairman of the Gujarat State Financial Corporation; which he managed very efficiently and got it listed in stock exchanges. However, the BJP’s tenure ended in just 2 years in 1997, but he had made a name for himself. The people of Gujarat supported and trusted him. The people of his constituency had access to contact him anytime with any problem, which made him a favourite among the people. At that time, the Congress was highly influential in rural Gujarat. Modi and Shah worked together to eliminate Congress in the rural areas. In the 1998 Gujarat Assembly Elections, Amit Shah won by a huge margin.
In 2000, Narendra Modi became Chief Minister of Gujarat, after the BJP removed Keshubhai Patel on complaints of inefficient governance. In 2002, Amit Shah won the Assembly Elections for the third time in a row and Narendra Modi appointed him as a minister in his cabinet. Shah was the youngest minister in his cabinet. Modi had complete faith in Shah, and he put him in charge of 12 portfolios. It included ministries such as Home, Civil Defence, Prison, Law and Justice, and Border Security among many more.
Before the 2014 General Elections, when Narendra Modi’s name came forward as the Prime Ministerial Candidate for the BJP, Amit Shah managed his campaign. He created awareness and took the help of social media to change people’s opinions in favour of Modi. He was appointed as the BJP state in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, which led to the BJP’s best performance in the state; winning 73 out of the 80 seats. After the elections, he was appointed as the President of the BJP (from 2014 to 2020). He has also served as chairman of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) since 2014.
After becoming the party president, Amit Shah started an aggressive membership drive, and by March 2015, BJP had claimed 100 million members. He has played an organising and membership promotional role in the elections of many states since 2014. In his initial two years, the BJP achieved success in Legislative Assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Assam but lost ground in Delhi and the large eastern state of Bihar in 2015. In 2017, he was partly credited with the party victories in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Manipur. He had been elected as a member of the upper house of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, from Gujarat in 2017. In 2018, the BJP won for the first time in the left-ruled north-eastern state of Tripura, where they won two-thirds of the votes. The BJP also made gains in Nagaland and Meghalaya and formed a government in both states with its allies, but lost power in the states of Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. A year later, the BJP won 303 seats to get a majority in the 2019 Indian general election under Amit Shah’s leadership; he became the most successful BJP president. He had given BJP workers a seemingly audacious target of crossing 300 seats (Ab ki Baar 300 paar) an initiative he called “Mission 300 Par”. The mission was accomplished under his leadership as party president cementing BJP undisputed king of India’s political terrain. In the 2019 General Elections, he contested from the Gandhinagar Constituency in Gujarat and defeated Congress candidate CJ Chavda by a margin of 5,57,014 votes. On 30 May 2019, He was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister in the Narendra Modi government, and he took charge as the Home Minister of India. Sworn in at the age of 54, he is the youngest serving full-time Home Minister.

Amit Shah took oath as Cabinet Minister on 30 May 2019 and took office as Minister of Home Affairs on 1 June 2019. On 5 August 2019, Shah moved a resolution to scrap Article 370 in the Rajya Sabha and divide the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two, with Jammu and Kashmir serving as one of the union territories, and Ladakh serving as a separate union territory.
In December 2019, he introduced the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, which grants Indian citizenship to religiously persecuted minority communities who migrated to the country before 2015 from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
In 2022 He introduced criminal procedure identification Bill 2022. The new bill will allow the police and prison authorities to collect, store and analyse physical and biological samples, including retina and iris scans, of convicts and persons arrested on various charges.
