Arvind Kejriwal is an Indian politician, activist, former bureaucrat and the current Chief Minister of Delhi. He is also the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party since 2012. He has represented the New Delhi constituency in the Delhi Legislative Assembly since 2015 and from 2013 to 2014. He is known for his involvement in the Right to Information (RTI) movement and for his role in the India Against Corruption (IAC) movement, popularly known as Anna Andolan.
Arvind Kejriwal was born on 16 August 1968 in Siwani Mandi, Bhiwani, Haryana, India. He is the son of Gobind Ram Kejriwal, an electrical engineer, and Gita Devi Kejriwal, a homeopathic doctor. He has a brother, Manoj Kejriwal and a sister, Ranjana Kejriwal. Arvind studied at St. Xavier’s School, Hisar, and then he studied mechanical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and joined the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in 1992. He worked as an Income Tax Officer for several years before entering politics. Arvind Kejriwal and Sunita Kejriwal get married in 1995, and the couple is blessed with two children, Pulkit and Harshita.
Activism and Political Career :
Arvind Kejriwal started social activism against corruption. In 2005, he founded the Parivartan NGO, which used the Right to Information Act to expose corruption in the government. In 2006, he was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership in recognition of his work in the RTI movement. In 2011, he launched the India Against Corruption movement, along with Anna Hazare, demanding a strong Lokpal bill to fight corruption. The movement gained widespread support and led to the drafting of a Lokpal bill in 2012.
In 2012, Arvind Kejriwal launched his political party, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Anna Hazare, the main face of Lokpal Andolan gets seperated on the issue of Political party formation. In the 2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, AAP won 28 seats, making it the second-largest party behind the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). First Term of Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister of Delhi :
Arvind Kejriwal’s first term as Chief Minister was short but fast and populist term. He announced free electricity and water to the poor, reducing bus fares, and providing free Wi-Fi etc. Then He resigned and started preapring for General Election. In 2014, He fought general election from Varanasi constituency against Narendra modi, but lost by the margin of more than 3 lakh votes.
Second Term of Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister of Delhi :
After Loosing election from Varnasi, Arvind Kejriwal returned to Delhi, apologised to the voters of Delhi for his resignation, and started preparation of Delhi Legislative assembly election. In the 2015 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, AAP won 67 seats, a landslide victory. Arvind Kejriwal was sworn in as Chief Minister for the second time on February 14, 2015.

Controversies :
Arvind Kejriwal has had a controversial history of allegations. In several cases Kejriwal has unconditionally apologised after allegations have been found baseless in defamation cases in courts and then he has issued apology letters to several leaders like Arun Jaitley, Nitin Gadkari, Vikram Majithia etc on the same. Not only Arvind Kejriwal, but three others from his party including Sanjay Singh, Raghav Chadha and Ashutosh apologised Arun Jaitley in a joint letter in 2018 regarding DDCA case. |
In March 2014, in a leaked video of an interview with journalist Punya Prasun Bajpai, Arvind Kejriwal was seen giving instructions to Bajpai on promoting his interview by comparing his resignation to the sacrifice of Bhagat Singh and dropping a certain portion of interview on privatisation of industries which would portray him anti-middle class. Later, when the interview was telecasted it was found that Punya Prasun Bajpai had actually complied to the instructions and raised questions on his journalistic integrity and ethics. |
In 2022, the Kejriwal government was accused of inflating the reported oxygen need of Delhi during the second wave of COVID-19 infections. |
In late April 2023, allegations surfaced that Arvind Kejriwal had misappropriated public funds for renovations of his residence in Delhi. Some National Media covered this story as Operation Sheeshmahal. An investigation was announced on 29 April 2023, Investigation is under progress. |
