In a remarkable performance, 19-year-old wrestling sensation Antim Panghal secured a bronze medal at the Asian Games, offering a bright spot for India’s wrestling contingent. Antim demonstrated her resilience and skill as she bounced back from a quarterfinal defeat to win the bronze medal in the women’s 53kg category.
Antim’s journey to the bronze began with an impressive victory over Uzbekistan’s Jasmina Immaeva, where she won convincingly with a score of 11-0. However, she faced a formidable challenge in the quarterfinals against two-time Japanese world champion Akari Fujinami, resulting in her quarterfinal defeat.
Undeterred by her earlier setback, Antim showcased her determination in the bronze medal bout against Mongolian wrestler Bolortuya Bat-Ochir. Antim took control of the match and secured a 3-1 victory, clinching the bronze medal for India.
Antim’s bronze medal win came as a much-needed boost for the Indian wrestling contingent at the Asian Games. Prior to her victory, Indian wrestlers Narinder Cheema (Greco-Roman 97kg), Naveen (Greco-Roman 130kg), and Pooja Gehlot (women’s 50kg) had faced elimination from the competition.
Pooja Gehlot competed in the women’s 50kg bronze medal bout but was outplayed by Aktenge Keunimjaeva, the Asian championship bronze winner, with a score of 2-9.
While there were high expectations from Mansi Ahlawat in the women’s 57kg category, she faced a quick defeat in her bronze play-off match against Uzbekistan’s Laylokhon Sobirova, who secured victory in just 70 seconds with a ‘fall.’
Antim Panghal’s remarkable performance is especially significant as it marks only the second wrestling medal for India at the Asian Games. Her journey to the medal podium showcases her exceptional talent and determination.
Antim’s inclusion in the Indian contingent for the Asian Games came after Vinesh Phogat withdrew due to an injury. She had challenged Vinesh for a trial bout, but Vinesh opted for a direct entry. However, Vinesh later suffered a knee injury and underwent surgery, leading to Antim’s opportunity to represent India.
In addition to Antim Panghal’s bronze medal, Indian wrestling fans are looking forward to the performances of Bajrang Punia (65kg) and Aman Sehrawat (56kg) in the upcoming matches at the Asian Games. Bajrang Punia, in particular, has faced scrutiny for accepting a direct entry into the tournament, and his performance will be closely watched by wrestling enthusiasts.
As India’s wrestling contingent continues to compete at the Asian Games, Antim Panghal’s bronze medal victory serves as an inspiration and a testament to the potential of young Indian wrestlers on the international stage.
