Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, the torchbearer of Indian athletics, envisions taking the country’s sports profile to new heights by hosting global events in the coming years. While India eyes the bid for the 2029 World Athletics Championships, Chopra believes that the nation can make significant strides by organizing other prestigious competitions of smaller scale before the flagship event.
In an interview facilitated by Switzerland Tourism, Chopra shared his perspective, saying, “It will be good if we host the 2029 World Championships, but 2029 is a long way to go. I think India can host some big global competitions like the Continental Tour event (of World Athletics) before that.”
The Continental Tour is an annual series of track and field competitions recognized by World Athletics, constituting the second tier of international one-day meetings after the prestigious Diamond League. Chopra emphasized that hosting such global events on Indian soil would not only keep the fans engaged but also benefit the country’s athletes by providing an opportunity to compete against international stars.
He added, “If international track and field stars come to India and compete against Indian athletes, it will be good for the country’s athletes as well as for the fans.”
Creating awareness among fans and elevating the sport’s popularity are key elements in Chopra’s vision for the growth of athletics in India. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that live telecasts or streaming of global events, particularly those featuring Indian athletes in Diamond League Meetings, are readily accessible to Indian fans.
Neeraj Chopra, who clinched the gold medal in javelin throw at the Tokyo Olympics, is gearing up for a robust defense of his title at the upcoming Paris Games in July. While finalizing his pre-Olympic competition schedule, he anticipates starting his competitive season in May, allowing for approximately two months of preparatory events.
Chopra expressed his intention to focus on technical refinement and strength-building ahead of the Paris Olympics. Emphasizing the need to remain injury-free, he acknowledged the impact of past injuries on his schedule and outlined plans to incorporate exercises that mitigate the risk of minor injuries, ensuring an uninterrupted and optimal preparation for the Paris Games.
Amidst his preparations, Neeraj Chopra recently took a short vacation in Switzerland, where he had the opportunity to meet tennis legend Roger Federer in Zurich. Reflecting on the meeting, Chopra expressed his admiration for Federer’s skills, sportsmanship, and ability to inspire millions globally. He highlighted Federer’s humility and easy-going charm, making the meeting a dream come true.
As an ambassador for Switzerland Tourism to India, Chopra’s engagement with Federer and his continued dedication to athletic excellence underscore his commitment to promoting sports and fostering international collaborations in the realm of athletics.
