On October 14, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai. The IOC session is a significant gathering of International Olympic Committee members where crucial decisions regarding the future of the Olympic Games are made. This marks the return of the IOC session to India after nearly 40 years since the 86th IOC session was held in New Delhi in 1983.
India’s hosting of the 141st IOC session reflects the country’s commitment to fostering global cooperation, celebrating sporting excellence, and furthering the Olympic ideals of friendship, respect, and excellence, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The IOC session serves as a platform for interaction and knowledge exchange among various stakeholders in the sports world. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, other IOC members, prominent Indian sports figures, and representatives from various sports federations, including the Indian Olympic Association, are attending the session.
In addition to the IOC session, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the 9th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi on October 13. The P20 summit was hosted by the Parliament of India under the broader framework of India’s G20 Presidency. This marked a historic event, as the Pan-African Parliament participated in the P20 Summit for the first time after the African Union became a member of G20 in September.
The P20 Summit featured thematic sessions focusing on various important subjects, including Transformation in People’s Lives through Public Digital Platforms, Women-led development, Accelerating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Sustainable Energy Transition.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in these significant events highlights India’s active role in the global sports community and its commitment to fostering international cooperation and excellence in the world of sports. It also reflects India’s growing influence on the global stage and its role in key international forums like the G20 and the International Olympic Committee.
