Shubman Gill, the talented Indian batter, has been named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September 2023 by the International Cricket Council (ICC). This recognition comes after Gill’s remarkable performance in One Day Internationals (ODIs) during the month.
In September, Shubman Gill scored an impressive 480 ODI runs at an average of 80. His consistency and stellar performance outshone other contenders, including fast bowler Mohammed Siraj and England’s opener Dawid Malan, leading to his well-deserved win.
Gill’s outstanding performance included scoring 302 runs at an average of 75.5 during the Asia Cup, where he played a crucial role in India’s victory against Sri Lanka. Notably, he remained unbeaten at 27* during India’s win by 10 wickets against Sri Lanka.
In the home ODI series against Australia before the World Cup, Gill continued his fine form by amassing 178 runs in just two innings. During the series, he registered a century, scoring 104 runs against Australia, following a brilliant century against Bangladesh (121) during the Asia Cup. These two centuries made it a memorable September for Gill.
Moreover, Gill contributed with three half-centuries during the month, showcasing his remarkable consistency at the crease. In eight innings, he was dismissed for less than fifty on only two occasions, further highlighting his proficiency in ODIs.
Currently, Shubman Gill holds the No. 2 ranking in the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, underlining his impressive record in the format. In just 35 ODI matches, he has scored 1917 runs at an impressive average of 66.1 and a strike rate of 102.84.
Despite missing India’s opening matches in the Cricket World Cup due to illness, Shubman Gill remains a pivotal player for the host nation’s prospects of winning the tournament, which would mark India’s first World Cup victory since 2011.
Upon receiving the award, Gill expressed his delight, stating, “I am delighted to have won the ICC Player of the Month award for the month of September. It’s a great privilege to represent India at the international level and contribute towards the team’s cause. This award will further motivate me to continue to seek excellence and make the country proud.”
Gill also extended his gratitude to his teammates, family, and coaches for their invaluable support in achieving this remarkable milestone.
