A day after participating in the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony in Ayodhya, Kangana took to Instagram on January 23 to announce the release date of her upcoming film ‘Emergency.’ Along with the announcement, she shared a new poster of the political drama, where she portrays the iconic former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

In the newly unveiled poster, Kangana is seen donning the look of Indira Gandhi, exuding power and authority. The caption accompanying the post read, “Unlock the story behind India’s darkest hour. Announcing Emergency on 14th June, 2024. Witness history come alive as the most feared and fiercest Prime Minister. Indira Gandhi thunders into cinemas. Emergency in cinemas on 14th June, 2024.”

The film, directed and written by Kangana herself, marks her second directorial venture after the historical epic ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi.’ Kangana described ‘Emergency’ as her most ambitious project and a grand period drama, bringing together the best of Indian and international talent. Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, the movie explores one of the most controversial chapters in Indian political history, the Emergency era.

Originally scheduled for release on November 24, 2023, ‘Emergency’ faced a postponement due to adjustments in Kangana’s busy schedule. The film boasts an ensemble cast that includes Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. Ritesh Shah has penned the screenplay and dialogues, making ‘Emergency’ Kangana’s first solo directorial film.

The storyline promises to delve into the heart of India’s political past, focusing on the controversial and tumultuous period of the Emergency. The film is set to shed light on the life and leadership of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the first woman Prime Minister of India, during one of the darkest periods in the country’s democracy.

In her statement, Kangana expressed excitement about bringing this significant episode in India’s history to the big screen, highlighting the importance of educating the younger generation about the Emergency, a chapter that had a profound impact on the nation.

Kangana’s foray into portraying historical and political figures aligns with her reputation for taking on challenging roles and addressing societal issues. The announcement of ‘Emergency’ comes after Kangana’s presence at the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony in Ayodhya, where she joined other dignitaries and celebrities.

The actor’s Instagram post not only revealed the release date but also showcased her commitment to projects that resonate with historical and political significance. Kangana has been known for her bold statements on various platforms, not just limited to the film industry, making her one of the most talked-about personalities in Bollywood.

The film’s title, ‘Emergency,’ serves as a powerful descriptor, immediately invoking memories of the controversial period between 1975 and 1977 when a state of emergency was declared in India. The political drama is expected to offer a cinematic interpretation of the events that unfolded during this time, providing audiences with a nuanced perspective on one of the most debated phases in Indian history.

Given the subject matter and Kangana’s track record of tackling complex narratives, ‘Emergency’ is likely to become a focal point for discussions on political history, leadership, and the implications of the Emergency period. The film’s release on June 14, 2024, adds a layer of anticipation, as audiences eagerly await Kangana’s portrayal of the formidable Indira Gandhi and the cinematic exploration of a critical juncture in India’s democracy.

As Kangana continues to make waves with her acting choices and directorial ventures, ‘Emergency’ is poised to be a significant addition to her body of work. Beyond the entertainment value, the film’s potential to spark conversations and reflections on historical events aligns with Kangana’s commitment to engaging with narratives that go beyond the conventional realms of Bollywood cinema.
