In a virtual address at the G20 Summit on November 22, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the importance of international collaboration in shaping global regulations for artificial intelligence (AI). Expressing the world’s collective apprehension about the potential adverse effects of AI, Modi emphasized the necessity for joint efforts to establish guidelines ensuring the safe and responsible development and use of AI technologies.

“As the world is worried about the negative effects of AI, India believes that we have to work together on global regulations for AI,” stated Prime Minister Modi during the summit. He acknowledged the transformative power of AI and its potential to benefit societies but stressed the need to address concerns and risks associated with its deployment.

Modi also specifically highlighted the threats posed by deepfake technology, emphasizing the dangers it poses to both society and individuals. Deepfakes involve the use of AI to create highly realistic, manipulated content, often in the form of videos or audio recordings, which can be misleading and malicious. The Prime Minister called for a collective understanding of the risks posed by deepfakes and the development of strategies to mitigate their negative impacts.

“We must understand the dangers posed by deepfakes to society and individuals,” Modi asserted, drawing attention to the challenges posed by the proliferation of misleading and fraudulent content created through AI techniques.

The Prime Minister’s remarks at the G20 Summit reflect India’s commitment to promoting responsible AI practices globally. As AI technologies continue to advance rapidly, the need for a comprehensive and collaborative framework becomes increasingly apparent. India’s call for global cooperation in regulating AI aligns with the broader discourse on establishing ethical standards and guidelines to harness the benefits of AI while minimizing potential risks.

In addition to addressing AI-related concerns, Modi touched upon the release of hostages in the Israel-Hamas conflict, expressing his welcome for the positive developments and expressing hope for the swift release of all hostages.

The G20 Summit provided a platform for leaders from member countries, international organizations, and guest nations to engage in discussions on various global issues. Modi’s emphasis on AI regulations reflects the growing recognition of the pivotal role technology plays in shaping the future, necessitating a collective and inclusive approach to address associated challenges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for global cooperation on AI regulations underscores the shared responsibility of nations in navigating the impact of advanced technologies on society and reinforces India’s commitment to fostering a safe and secure digital future.
