In response to the forecast of hot and humid weather in Odisha in the upcoming days, the state government has taken proactive measures to mitigate potential risks. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted elevated temperatures and humid conditions across significant parts of the state, prompting authorities to implement preventive measures to safeguard the health and well-being of residents.

According to reports by PTI, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Satyabrata Sahu has issued a directive to all district collectors urging immediate action to address the challenges posed by the anticipated heatwave conditions. The directive emphasizes the importance of implementing measures to prevent any casualties resulting from extreme heat and humidity.

As part of these measures, the School and Mass Education department has instructed all primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools, as well as private institutions, to conduct morning classes starting from April 2nd. The classes will commence at 7 AM and conclude at 11:30 AM, aiming to minimize students’ exposure to the intense heat during peak hours.

Furthermore, various government departments have been tasked with addressing the challenges posed by the hot and humid weather. The Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department, along with the Housing & Urban Development Department, have been instructed to identify areas facing water scarcity and ensure the uninterrupted supply of drinking water to residents. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish Drinking Water Kiosks in strategic locations such as marketplaces and bus stands to provide access to clean drinking water.

Moreover, proactive measures are being taken to maintain and enhance water supply systems, including tube wells and piped water networks, to mitigate the impact of water scarcity during the hot weather conditions. The government’s efforts are aimed at ensuring that communities have access to essential resources and services to cope with the challenges posed by the prevailing weather conditions.

The IMD’s forecast indicates that maximum temperatures are expected to range between 38 to 40 degrees Celsius in many interior regions and between 36 to 38 degrees Celsius in coastal districts over the next 4 to 5 days. Additionally, a gradual increase of 2-3 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures is anticipated during the same period.

The forecast also highlights warm nighttime conditions in isolated areas within interior Odisha, which are expected to persist over the next few days. To address these challenges, the state government is closely monitoring weather patterns and coordinating with relevant agencies to implement timely interventions to safeguard public health and well-being.

In light of the forecasted temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in certain locations, including Malkangiri, the government’s proactive measures are crucial in mitigating the impact of the heatwave on vulnerable populations. By mandating morning classes and ensuring access to drinking water, the government aims to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses and promote the safety of residents across the state.

Overall, the collaborative efforts of various government departments, coupled with timely interventions based on weather forecasts, demonstrate the state government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of its citizens during periods of extreme weather conditions. As the hot and humid weather persists, continued vigilance and proactive measures will be essential in effectively addressing the challenges posed by the prevailing climatic conditions in Odisha.
