The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the Congress, alleging that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had “given away” India’s chance at a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to China. The BJP expressed its criticism on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) and stated, “Today, while India, under the leadership of PM Modi, is shaping the world, and the world is backing the country’s bid for a permanent UNSC seat, which Nehru gave away to China on a platter… The unpatriotic deeds of the Gandhi family haunt our history, to date.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently reiterated the need for reforms within the UN Security Council and other global institutions. He emphasized that adapting global systems to current realities is essential for shaping a better future for the world. Modi pointed out that when the United Nations was established, the world had only 51 founding members, but today there are around 200 member countries. Despite this significant change, the number of permanent UNSC members remains the same. He stressed the importance of reflecting these new realities in the global structure.
Today, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the upcoming chair of the G21 bloc, echoed similar sentiments and called for the reform of the UNSC to better align with contemporary realities. President Lula da Silva emphasized that his country wishes to prioritize the issue of equality during its presidency.
Furthermore, U.S. President Joe Biden reaffirmed his support for a reformed UNSC that includes India as a permanent member. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his pride in the prospect of India becoming a permanent member of the Security Council. These statements from world leaders underline the global consensus on the need for reforms in the UNSC and recognition of India’s role as a significant stakeholder in international affairs.
