FBI Launches Investigation into Sexual Exploitation Claims

The FBI is investigating allegations made by the BBC against former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO, Mike Jeffries, regarding sexual exploitation of men at events he hosted worldwide.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched an investigation into allegations of sexual exploitation against Mike Jeffries, the former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F), following a report by the BBC. The report also suggests that Jeffries and his British partner were involved in operating a sex-trafficking business. The FBI is actively interviewing potential witnesses and issuing subpoenas as part of the ongoing investigation.

The accusations against Jeffries first surfaced in a BBC podcast series and documentary. According to the report, eight men claimed to have attended events hosted by Jeffries and his partner between 2009 and 2015 in various cities, including London, Marrakesh, and Paris. The men alleged that Jeffries and his partner either directed or participated in sexual activities with them during these events.

The BBC’s investigation uncovered flight tickets and event schedules, indicating a well-organized scheme involving a network of recruiters and an intermediary named James Jacobson. Jacobson, aged 70, has denied any wrongdoing, stating that men attended these events “with their eyes wide open.” When approached by the BBC at his home, Jacobson offered to provide information if his name was kept out of the report.

Abercrombie & Fitch responded to the allegations by expressing its “appalled and disgusted” reaction to Jeffries’ purported behavior. As a consequence, a significant portion of Jeffries’ annual retirement benefits, estimated at $1 million (£792,242), has been suspended by the brand.

The accusations against Jeffries and his partner go beyond sexual exploitation, with a civil lawsuit filed against them claiming involvement in a sex-trafficking business. The FBI is taking a closer look at these allegations, and the investigation is being conducted by agents specializing in alleged sex crimes and federal prosecutors from the Eastern District of New York.

Mike Jeffries, who served as the CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch for many years, has consistently refused to comment on the allegations, directing inquiries to his attorney. His British partner, Matthew Smith, has not publicly addressed the accusations either.

This investigation adds to the ongoing scrutiny of workplace misconduct and abuse of power, particularly in high-profile industries. The #MeToo movement has shed light on various cases of sexual harassment and exploitation, prompting investigations and legal actions against individuals in positions of authority.

The FBI’s involvement indicates the seriousness with which the allegations against Jeffries and his partner are being treated. As the investigation unfolds, more details may emerge, shedding light on the extent of the alleged misconduct and any potential legal consequences for those involved.
