A tragic incident in Canada has led to the untimely death of 24-year-old Indian student, Gurvinder Nath, who was violently assaulted during a carjacking. The incident took place in the early hours of July 9 in the area of Creditview Road and Britannia Road West, as reported by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBS).

Upon receiving the devastating news of her son’s passing, Narinder Devi, aged 50, tragically died by suicide on Thursday. The bodies of both mother and son were brought back to their hometown, and a joint cremation took place on July 29, according to a report by Indian Express.

Investigations revealed that Narinder Devi was in a state of shock following the loss of her son, and family members confirmed that she was unable to bear the weight of this tragic event, as stated by a police official to Hindustan Times on July 28.

Gurvinder Nath’s grandmother, Vidya Devi, aged 75, shared heart-wrenching details, mentioning that she herself had attempted self-harm after hearing about her grandson’s death. Gurvinder’s brother, Kamal, stated that he suspected their mother had consumed pesticide, leading to the tragedy.

In the wake of Gurvinder Nath’s passing, a candlelight vigil was held in Mississauga, where over 200 people gathered to mourn his loss and pay their respects, as reported by Canadian media. The incident occurred when Gurvinder, a food delivery driver, was confronted by unknown suspects during a delivery. A physical altercation ensued, leaving Gurvinder critically injured. The suspects fled the scene in his vehicle, and Gurvinder was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries on July 14, according to Peel Police’s statement.

During the vigil at Paramount Fine Foods Centre, speakers addressed the crowd, highlighting how Gurvinder had come to Canada with his family’s hopes and dreams, only for tragedy to strike. Siddhartha Nath, the consul general of India in Toronto, expressed his condolences to the grieving family, friends, and the wider community. He acknowledged the overwhelming support the community had shown during this difficult time.

The loss of Gurvinder Nath and the subsequent tragedy of his mother’s passing have left the community mourning the loss of two precious lives. The incident has raised awareness about the importance of supporting individuals during times of grief and trauma.
