India has extended its congratulations to Mohamed Muizzu, the newly elected President of the Maldives, following his victory in the presidential elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first world leader to convey his greetings to President-elect Muizzu, reaffirming India’s commitment to enhancing the longstanding bilateral relationship between the two nations.

Addressing a press briefing, Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s prompt congratulatory message to the President-elect. He emphasized India’s dedication to strengthening the time-tested India-Maldives bilateral relationship and enhancing overall cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.

Subsequently, the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, Munu Mahawar, met with President-elect Mohamed Muizzu to convey PM Modi’s greetings and discuss ways to enhance and strengthen bilateral relations.

The MEA also commended the Maldivian people for their commitment to democratic governance, constitutional processes, and the rule of law, as demonstrated through the successful presidential elections.

India and the Maldives share a significant and close partnership, with a focus on capacity building and addressing shared challenges and priorities. As neighboring nations, they collaborate closely to tackle issues such as transnational crimes and Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Relief (HADR). India looks forward to engaging with the new administration in the Maldives on these and other important matters.

Prime Minister Modi had previously congratulated President-elect Mohamed Muizzu on October 1, expressing India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.

Mohamed Muizzu, the candidate from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), secured victory in the presidential elections with over 53 percent of the votes. This outcome followed a second round of polling after no candidate emerged as the clear winner in the initial round. Muizzu had emerged as the frontrunner in the first round with approximately 46 percent of the votes, ultimately prevailing in the election.
