Aaliyah Kashyap, daughter of renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, candidly opened up about her recent weight gain and insecurities during a conversation with her fiancé, Shane Gregoire, on their podcast, Opposites Attract. The YouTuber and social media influencer discussed the impact of public comments on her weight and the toll it took on her mental health.
In the episode titled “Exposing Our Insecurities,” Aaliyah shared her experiences with body image and how she initially welcomed her weight gain. She said, “My weight and my body, I am quite insecure about right now. It is crazy how detrimental this insecurity can be to mental health. I was always really skinny; my whole life, my metabolic rate was really high, and I used to eat a lot. I always wanted to put on weight because I was scary skinny.”
Aaliyah continued, “But two years ago, when I started taking antidepressants, I started putting on so much weight. I think I’ve put on about 12 or 13 kg in the last year and a half. Which is a lot for me. It’s a huge change from what I’ve been used to my whole life.” She attributed her weight gain to a combination of factors, including antidepressant medication.
The YouTuber also discussed the unhealthy relationship she developed with food as her weight gain continued. She revealed that public comments about her appearance, especially on social media, had a significant impact on her mental health. Aaliyah expressed her disappointment at people’s tendency to comment publicly on her weight, emphasizing that they often didn’t consider how such comments might affect her.
She recalled a recent incident involving a massage therapist who commented on her weight, making her cry during the massage. Aaliyah stressed the need for sensitivity and kindness when discussing others’ bodies, particularly in public spaces like social media.
Shane Gregoire, Aaliyah’s fiancé, chimed in on the issue, noting that the focus on people’s weight in India was disproportionate and often led to harmful comments. He expressed his frustration with the prevalence of such discussions in Indian society.
Despite her ongoing insecurities and dissatisfaction with her appearance, Aaliyah mentioned that she is in a healthier mindset today and better equipped to handle comments about her weight. Her candid conversation sheds light on the importance of promoting body positivity and kindness in online interactions and underscores the potential negative impact of public scrutiny on individuals’ mental health.
Aaliyah Kashyap’s willingness to share her personal struggles on her podcast serves as a reminder of the importance of open dialogue surrounding body image and mental health issues.
