The Mumbai police have increased security outside Shah Rukh Khan’s bungalow, Mannat, after a group of protestors gathered outside his residence on August 26. The protestors were reportedly demonstrating against the superstar’s endorsement of online gaming apps. Around four to five people from the Untouch Youth Foundation were detained by the police on August 27 in connection with the protests.
According to media reports, the protestors expressed concerns that these online gaming apps misguide and corrupt the youth, and they urged celebrities to refrain from endorsing ads that lead to societal misguidance. Krishchandra Adal, President of the Untouch India Foundation, stated that games like Junglee rummy are played by the younger generation and accused Bollywood celebrities of deceiving them by promoting online games. He mentioned that while people are arrested for playing Junglee rummy or gambling outside, big Bollywood stars are promoting these games for money.
The Untouch Youth Foundation also expressed opposition to other actors including Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh, Prakash Raj, Annu Kapoor, Rana Daggubati, and cricketers. They had planned to protest outside the houses of these stars as well but were detained by the police.
In response to these concerns, the Indian government warned media, social media platforms, and related parties against enabling and carrying advertisements by online real-money gaming (RMG) firms. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) cautioned that appropriate actions would be taken if these platforms fail to comply with its advisory. The government aims to prevent advertising of games that may qualify as betting or gambling due to their financial and socioeconomic risks, particularly for the youth.
