In a significant legal development, a court in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, has convicted Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan, his wife Tazeen Fatima, and their son Abdullah Azam in a fake birth certificate case dating back to 2019. The court handed down a maximum sentence of seven years in jail for all three convicts and imposed a fine of ₹15,000 on each of them.
The case dates back to January 3, 2019 when BJP MLA Akash Saxena filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the Ganj police station in Rampur. The complaint alleged that Azam Khan and his wife were involved in facilitating their son’s acquisition of two counterfeit birth certificates, one from Lucknow and another from Rampur.
According to the charge sheet, the birth certificate issued by the Rampur municipality indicated Abdullah Azam’s date of birth as January 1, 1993, while the certificate from Lucknow stated his birthdate as September 30, 1990.
The court’s decision to convict the three family members marks a significant legal development, and they were taken into judicial custody following the verdict.
Former District Government Counsel Arun Parkash Saxena, who represented the prosecution, confirmed the court’s decision, stating, “After the court verdict, the trio was taken into judicial custody and will be sent to jail from the court itself.”
Arun Saxena, the former Deputy General of Police (Crime), commented on the case, saying, “Abdullah Azam Khan had two birth certificates. Akash Saxena filed an FIR. After the probe, the charge sheet was filed. The court has given its judgment today, and all three people were found guilty. On the conviction point, the court sentenced all three to a maximum of seven years’ imprisonment. Approximately a fine of ₹15,000 has also been imposed.”
The conviction of Azam Khan, a prominent leader in the Samajwadi Party, could have significant political implications. His party, the SP, has been a major player in the politics of Uttar Pradesh. This development will likely be closely watched by political observers and may influence the dynamics in the state’s political landscape.
