During the India International Footwear Fair 2023 (IIFF) held in New Delhi, Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, highlighted the immense significance of India’s footwear and leather industry as a major contributor to foreign exchange earnings. He emphasized that the industry’s labor-intensive nature plays a crucial role in providing employment opportunities to around 4.5 million people, with an impressive 40% of the workforce being women.

Piyush Goyal expressed unshakable confidence in India’s potential to rise as a global leader in producing top-quality footwear. He proudly mentioned India’s remarkable rankings in the global market, being the second-largest exporter of leather garments, the third-largest exporter of saddlery & harnesses, and the fourth-largest exporter of leather goods.

An intriguing aspect that the minister highlighted was that over 95% of the production units in this industry fall under the purview of the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME). This underscores the industry’s significant contribution to the growth of small and medium-sized businesses in India.

To further distinguish Indian footwear on the global stage and reduce reliance on foreign sizing standards, Goyal announced the imminent launch of “Indian size” for footwear. This move is expected to facilitate better identification and standardization of Indian footwear, making it more appealing to international consumers.

In line with India’s commitment to continuous improvement, the government is planning to establish state-of-the-art testing facilities as part of the footwear and leather development program. These facilities will enhance the quality of products and ensure compliance with international standards.

Goyal urged all stakeholders in the industry to seize the opportunities and expand their businesses while staying committed to sustainability and quality. He emphasized the importance of adopting eco-friendly processes and effective waste management to minimize the industry’s environmental impact.

Moreover, Goyal encouraged the exploration of renewable energy sources for electricity, aligning the industry with India’s clean energy goals and contributing to a greener future.

Recognizing the dynamic nature of the market, Goyal stressed the need for collaboration between premier institutions such as the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI), and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) with the industry. This collaboration will foster innovation, research, and development, ultimately strengthening the industry’s competitive position in the global market.

Overall, the minister’s address at the India International Footwear Fair 2023 reflected India’s determination to excel in the footwear and leather industry, leveraging its strengths, fostering innovation, and ensuring sustainable growth in the global arena.
