The Western Railway has disclosed its plan to carry out a significant infrastructure project on Mumbai’s Harbour Line. A 6th line construction project, aimed at enhancing rail connectivity, will be undertaken between Khar Road and Goregaon stations. To facilitate this development, a special traffic block will be implemented on the Harbour Line.
The traffic block is scheduled for Thursday night and will last for ten hours, from 00.30 am to 10.30 am, occurring during the intervening night of October 26 and October 27. The Central Railway shared this information in an official release.
During the specified block period, suburban services on the Harbour Line between Andheri and Goregaon stations will not be available. Passengers and commuters should take note of the adjusted train schedules.
The last local train bound for Goregaon from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) will depart at 22.54 pm on October 26. Conversely, the last train for Mumbai CSMT from Goregaon will leave at 12.07 am on October 27.
After the completion of the traffic block, the first suburban train for Goregaon from Mumbai CSMT will commence its journey at 11.16 am. Likewise, the first local train for Mumbai CSMT from Goregaon will set off at 11.23 am.
Earlier this week, Western Railway had announced the cancellation of nearly 2,525 local train services until November 6. This disruption is due to a block that started on October 7, essential for the construction of the 6th line connecting Khar and Goregaon stations. It was reported that 230 to 316 Up (towards Churchgate) and Down (towards Virar/Dahanu) suburban trains would be canceled daily. On November 4, 93 locals are expected to be canceled, along with 110 on November 5.
The Harbour Line, operated by Central Railways, runs parallel to the Western Railway’s suburban network. The construction of the 6th line between Khar Road and Goregaon stations serves to separate mail or express trains from local trains. Additionally, this initiative aims to enhance the carrying capacity of the local train network.
The entire 30 km stretch from Mumbai Central to Borivali for the 6th line project is expected to have an estimated cost of ₹918 crore. Such train blocks, which temporarily suspend services, are essential for maintaining rail tracks and related infrastructure.
This comprehensive development signifies a continued effort to improve and modernize Mumbai’s crucial railway network, ensuring a more efficient and seamless transportation system for commuters and residents of the city.
