Alka Lamba is an Indian politician. After serving for more than 20 years, she quit congress party to join the Aam Aadmi Party on 26 December 2014. She won MLA election from the Chandni Chowk constituency on AAP Ticket. She quit AAP in September 2019 citing disrespect for her within the party and returned to the Congress party.
Personal Life :
Alka Lamba was born on Monday, 1 September 1975, in New Delhi. Her father’s name is Amar Nath Lamba, and her mother’s name is Raj Kumari Lamba. She did her schooling from Government Girls Senior Secondary School No. 1, Delhi. She did her BSc from Delhi University. She did her MSc & MEd from Bundelkhand University. Political Career :
Alka Lamba was only 19 years old when she began her political career in 1994 as a student leader. She joined the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress party. She was former president of Delhi university students union (DUSU), former national president of NSUI. In 2002, she was appointed as the General Secretary of All India Mahila Congress. In 2003, she unsuccessfully contested Delhi Assembly elections from Moti Nagar. In 2006 she became a member of All India Congress Committee and was appointed as General Secretary of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee. She was a Secretary All India Congress Committee at the Indian National Congress Party from 2007 to 2011.
Alka left Indian National Congress Party in December 2014 to join Aam Aadmi Party. In February 2015, she contested in Delhi Legislative Assembly election from Chandni Chowk constituency on Aam Aadmi Party’s ticket. She defeated her nearest rival, Suman Kumar Gupta of Bharatiya Janata Party, by a margin of 18,287 votes. She was however disqualified from the Delhi assembly by Delhi speaker for violating the rules for party change over in a gesture of strong warning to tainted turncoats. She again joined congress party.
Controversies :
- While being a member of National Commission for Women, Alka Lamba went to meet the victim of Guwahati molestation case and was widely criticised for revealing victim’s identity in a press conference. After such action, she was abandoned by the fact finding committee of National Commission for Women.
- In August 2015, Alka Lamba long with her supporters, had severely vandalized a liquor shop located near the Kashmere Gate area of old Delhi. Also, in a CCTV footage, it was found that she, herself, was guiding the attack and asking her supporters to throw out the stuff from the shop.
- Once, Alka Lamba climbed up a fire brigade vehicle, which was called to douse the fire, to examine the ongoing rescue operation in the Chandni Chowk area. For this action, she was also criticised by the public and many political leaders, as it had delayed the process of the rescue operation.
- In December 2018, AAP passed a resolution in Delhi Assembly to withdraw Bharat Ratna conferred on the former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi for his alleged role in the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots. Alka Lamba posted the resolution on her social media account and alleged that the party had pressured her to support the resolution, and she had staged out.
Social Work :
Alka Lamba started the non governmental organisation (NGO) India Foundation in 2006 with the aim of empowering women and youth and encouraging them to take part in the political, social and economic development of India. The NGO deals mainly with women’s issues.
