Volvo Auto has unveiled a teaser for its eagerly anticipated EM90 luxury electric MPV, which is poised to become the third addition to the brand’s growing all-electric lineup. The EM90, built upon the born electric platform, is scheduled to make its global debut on November 12, 2023. Although primarily targeted at the Chinese market, there’s optimism that the EM90 will eventually be introduced in other countries as well.
Anticipated to share characteristics with its parent company’s counterpart, the Geely Zeekr 009 MPV, the Volvo EM90 luxury electric MPV is generating excitement among electric vehicle enthusiasts.
The teaser image offers a glimpse of several notable features of the EM90. These include dual sunroofs, a sleek sloped front windshield, and a vertical tailgate adorned with distinctive T-shaped LED taillights. The presence of sliding doors hints at a spacious interior, with a sneak peek of the second-row individual seats also provided in the teaser.
Described by Volvo as a family car that offers a “Scandinavian living room on the move,” the EM90’s powertrain details are yet to be fully revealed. However, speculations suggest that it could adopt a similar setup to the Geely Zeekr 009. This counterpart employs a dual-motor configuration with an output of 536 bhp, achieving a 0 to 100 kmph acceleration in just 4.5 seconds.
The Geely Zeekr 009 relies on a substantial 140 kWh battery pack, granting it an impressive range of 817 km on a single charge. Given that both vehicles are expected to have similarities, a similar weight to the 009’s approximately 3-tonne weight could be projected for the EM90.
Remaining true to Volvo’s signature Scandinavian design ethos, the EM90 is anticipated to offer an aesthetically pleasing and functional design. Collaboratively developed powertrain and battery solutions are expected to provide cost-efficiency benefits to the automaker through economies of scale.
Significantly, the EM90 marks Volvo’s inaugural entry into the MPV segment, representing a departure from its SUV-focused offerings. The upcoming model follows the introduction of the S60 sedan in 2019. While its primary target is the Chinese market, there’s also speculation about the EM90’s potential introduction to the Indian market at a later stage. Further details are eagerly awaited in the coming weeks.
