Union Minister Jitendra Singh emphasized the continued global significance of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) group during the 11th BRICS STI ministerial meeting held virtually at Goeberha in South Africa. He highlighted BRICS as the most populated marketplace, driven by a knowledge-based, creative, and innovative economy.
Addressing the meeting on “STI Priorities and Policies Updates,” Singh encouraged BRICS member countries to collaborate in identifying and exploring regional scientific research challenges. He suggested seeking joint science and technology (S&T) solutions that are tailored to local economies.
Singh expressed India’s commitment to supporting BRICS’ efforts in developing inclusive and innovative solutions. He stressed the importance of digital and technological tools in areas such as health, agriculture, water, marine sciences, renewable energy, biotechnology, advanced digital technologies, and environmental conservation. These collaborative efforts aim to promote sustainable development and ensure affordable and equitable access to global public goods for all.
The minister extended India’s willingness to enhance collaboration among BRICS nations in the field of science, technology, and innovation. He highlighted the role of the recently approved National Research Foundation (NRF), which aims to ensure equitable funding for scientific research and encourage greater private sector participation. Singh emphasized that the NRF will encourage companies to invest in research and development (R&D) to foster a culture of innovation in the country.
The BRICS group has emerged as a key player in the global economic landscape, representing a significant portion of the world’s population and collective economic power.
