Bangladesh recently witnessed the conclusion of its national elections, marking the victory of incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who secured her fifth term in office as the leader of the Awami League. This general election, adding to the country’s tumultuous poll history, witnessed opposition parties boycotting the voting process, citing concerns over the lack of a guarantee for ‘fair and free’ polls.
According to unofficial results from the offices of the Election Commission, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League dominated the electoral landscape by winning 223 out of 299 seats, securing a simple majority in the parliament. Results for one seat were postponed, reflecting the intensity of the political atmosphere.

He also commended the people of Bangladesh for the successful conduct of the elections, expressing a commitment to strengthen the enduring and people-centric partnership between India and Bangladesh.
During a press conference at her residence, Ganabhaban, in Dhaka, Sheikh Hasina expressed gratitude towards India, emphasizing its pivotal role in supporting Bangladesh during critical moments in history. The Prime Minister hailed the enduring friendship between the two countries, underscoring the importance of India as a key ally.
Sheikh Hasina outlined the government’s priorities for the next five years, focusing on economic progress and the fulfillment of ongoing initiatives. She highlighted the commitment to the election manifesto, ensuring that it guides the budgetary decisions aimed at delivering on promises made to the citizens. The Prime Minister stressed the paramount importance of the development of the people and the country as the primary objective.

The national election unfolded amidst the boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who is presently in jail. Despite the opposition’s absence, Sheikh Hasina’s electoral triumph underscores her enduring popularity and the mandate she carries into her fifth term, promising a continued focus on the nation’s progress and development.
